9 Iranian female prisoners go on hunger strike

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? At least nine Iranian women political prisoners have gone on a hunger strike to protest snap body searches and abuse by prison guards at the main prison in Tehran, according to an Iranian opposition website.

The kaleme.org reported late Wednesday that the women started the strike after female guards at Evin prison in northern Tehran carried out unannounced inspections that included body searches, beating and verbal insults of the prisoners.

The report said the prisoners were mainly political activists and journalists convicted in the wake of mass street protests that followed the disputed 2009 re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The website says the strikers have demanded an apology and guarantees that the guards would not undertake similar actions in the future.

Their strike coincides with that of internationally renowned human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, who has been refusing food in the same prison since last week to protest mistreatment by authorities.

Prison authorities have banned Sotoudeh, 46, from having family visits by her husband and children.

A lawyer who represented imprisoned Iranian opposition activists, Sotoudeh was as detained in 2010 and a court sentenced her to six years in prison on security charges.

Britain's Middle East minister Alistair Burt expressed concern Wednesday over the health of Sotoudeh and urged Iran to review her case.

A delegation from the European Union last week cancelled a visit to Tehran after Iranian authorities rejected its request to meet Sotoudeh and dissident filmmaker Jafar Panahi.

The European Parliament awarded the 2012 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to both in October.

Panahi's films are known for their humanist perspective on life in Iran, often focusing on the hardships of children, the poor and women. He won the Camera d'Or at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival.

Panahi was also sentenced to a six-year prison term in Tehran.

Wilson Butler Designs $50M Expansion for Broward Center for the ...

Boston ? A phased $50 million expansion, renovation and rebranding of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, designed by Wilson Butler Architects, will add new dining and hospitality venues, update existing theaters and significantly increase educational program space at the 20-year old Fort Lauderdale venue. The first phase includes a complete restoration of the Center?s flagship performance space, the 2,660-seat Au-Rene Theater that will feature new seating, a new orchestra pit, and new lighting and acoustical systems. When it reopened October 26th, the newly-upgraded Au-Rene Theater unveiled a Club Level seating area with exclusive access to a VIP lounge with full bar and food service and a dedicated center-view section on the Mezzanine Level.

Over the next 18 months, The Center?s expansion will include the new two-story Huizenga Pavilion, a sustainably-designed waterfront bistro offering casual dining in both indoor and outdoor settings, plus 3,000 square feet of event and conference space. Wilson Butler also designed the new three-story Rose Miniaci Arts Education Center, a 21st Century arts education wing with performance, studio and classroom space. Additional design components to be added include a new arrival plaza and marquee, the Intermezzo Tastings Room, a newly-restored lobby and front porch space a the Au-Rene Theater, outdoor seating in the Peck Courtyard and terraced dining areas on the hillside between the Center and the Riverwalk.

According to Scott Butler of Wilson Butler Architects, the central idea is to transform the audience experience by providing a range of venues and options that work together to encourage guests to arrive early and stay late. ?Most performing arts venues are only active for four hours per night for 200 nights a year. With this redesign and the addition of new dining and entertainment spaces, the Broward Center will be bustling for 14 hours per day, 7 days a week,? he said. ?There is already a strong community connection that people in South Florida have with Broward, and the new experiences available will extend that connection for future generations.

Another promising aspect of the guest experience enrichment is the Broward Center?s plans to take advantage of the expanded venues to bring the performers, artists and entertainment seen on stage to create pre-and-post-show activity to the new spaces.

?The opportunity is to create one-of-a-kind spaces and experiences that compete favorably with online entertainment, home theatre and other hospitality destinations,? said Scott Wilson. ?Performance and arts venues today need to change the conventional way of delivering entertainment in order to capture audiences that have many other choices available.?

The project is an encore assignment for firm co-founders Scott Butler and Scott Wilson. The two worked together on the design for the original Broward Center complex two decades ago as architects at Benjamin Thompson Associates. Scott Wilson was the Center?s original project architect and Scott Butler was its project designer. The project is being constructed by joint venture partnership Stiles/Miller LLC, and owner?s project manager Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc.

Favorable Business Structures for Web Entrepreneurs In The US

You started an online business which may be an e-commerce website or a blog(or any thing like this) and now you want to register or incorporate your business. If you ask why you need to incorporate then please read my previous article about that. Well its probably a great thing if you want to register in the US because it has been a great business friendly country since a long time. In fact almost every magazine considers the US as one of the top 10 destinations while ranking almost any other country. So what are the stuff that one faces and how it helps, lets have a look.

Doing business in USA is simple. You can go ahead with either of below :

  • Sole Proprietorship
  • Partnership(LP/General/LLP/LLLP)
  • Corporation(S Corp or C Corp)
  • LLC(Limited Liability Company)

Of the above, the one that is best suited with liability protection and is considered as a separate legal entity include corporation and Limited Liability company. Both of the entities are some how like this :

Corporation

A corporation is the simplest and the oldest way of doing business in a protected way(be it in The US or the whole world). A regular corporation is a C Corporation which has the following features :

  • Separate Legal entity than its owners
  • Formed by individual which can also be other corporations(if not humans) or organizations
  • Double taxation(both at corporate and individual level)
  • Investment is really easy, and can attract investors from all over the world
  • Most states allow the corporation to have its office anywhere in the country(provided you have a?registered?office in the state)

Unlike the above the S Corporation is a regular corporation which has a special status by IRS. Its called the S status and has to be mentioned when the corporation is being incorporated. In that the benefits as which may be seen are :

  • Separate Legal entity
  • Single Pass through taxation(only the individual(s) who own the corp. is taxed not the corp)
  • Investments are fairly easy
  • All the owners have to be Americans or US Permanent residents
  • Maximum number of shareholders can be 100.

Form a Corporation Online?

Also some other restriction as well as advantages apply. The only thing this business is best suited for new business as its not as complicated as a C Corporation and lots of money is not lost in taxes, provided the business owners are not a lot and all of them are based in the USA or are Americans.

LLC( Limited Liability Company)

This is probably the simplest form of legal structure under which any one can do business in a?fairly?protected way. The advantages are :

  • Legal entity separate from that of its owners
  • Can be taxed as a partnership or sole proprietorship(pass through taxation) or as a C corporation.
  • Can have unlimited amount of members.
  • Members can appoint?mangers?to run the business or can do it themselves.
  • Members can be citizens/residents of any country.
  • Really less paperwork as compared with corporations(only annual report filling is required)

Probably one of the best structures for all business that is owned by Solopreneurs or 5-10 member business. Even people doing business in any part of the world can form an LLC online and maintain it as well.?Hardly?the cost would range $200-$300 annually for the?maintenance?depending on the requirements of the LLC.

View the Requirements and Form your LLC

Doing Business As or DBA(Sole?Proprietorship/Partnerships)

Both of the above business are the most used form of business throughout the world. In fact almost every country has this form of business the most(except for offshore tax havens, maybe). Registering as a sole proprietoship is literally easy and infact can be done in a few days.

You can also form your sole proprietorship online starting from just $110. This would be just a one time fee and you won?t be able to pay anything else annually except for if you require a license that is required by your state laws. This is one of the forms that would provide you with:

  • Separate Business Name
  • Have a bank account in the business name
  • No annual requirements
  • Branding

But you won?t get?liability?protection, that means if by any chance you are unable to pay your?business?debts or are sued, then you as a person is in legal trouble instead of your business because in legal terms you and your business are considered to be the same and are not different.

Form A DBA Now

Also note that you can always start as a sole?proprietor?or as a partnership firm initially when there are no chances of being sued or as such. Subsequently as your business grows you may consider incorporating or forming an LLC(when you have money to handle the costs). also know that if you have already formed an LLC or corporation you can still go ahead and register a DBA for your LLC/corp if you want to do business with an additional name.

Lonmin PLC may restructure after violent strike

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Lonmin Platinum said it must restructure its operations after violent strikes that caused the deaths of more than 40 people and reduced the company's output.

The world's third largest platinum producer employs about 28,000 people in South Africa, and the latest move may see a reduction in its employment. The company said Thursday that it released a statement to unions saying that it is contemplating the restructuring. The company said it does not know at this stage the number of employees who might be affected by any changes.

Lonmin, in a rights issue on Tuesday, said "a number of measures are in place, or are expected to be implemented during the 2013 financial year, both to address the pressures of gross cost increases and also to improve the effectiveness of the company's expenditure," including a review of the company's operating model and management structure.

In the same statement, the company also asked shareholders for $800 million.

Strikes at Lonmin's Marikana mines, northwest of Johannesburg, started in August and continued for nearly six weeks before a deal was reached with the miners. Violence during the strikes led to the deaths of 46 people, including 34 miners who were shot dead by police. South Africa has begun an inquiry into the deaths and the company is being investigated, along with police and unions.

"These events have increased operating costs for Lonmin and other companies," in the industry, "while at the same time creating supply constraints which have contributed to an increase" in prices.

The strike negotiations resulted in workers getting pay raises of up to 22 percent and a once-off payment of 2,000 rand ($240).

Lonmin said the wage increases raise employment costs for 2013 by 11 percent, and the business has not achieved full production in the early stages of ramping up production after the strike. It said that operations produced 1.63 million tons during the fourth quarter of 2012, a decrease of 1.65 million tons or 50.4 percent from the fourth quarter of 2011.

"The fall in production is primarily as a direct consequence of the events at Marikana," it said.

The trade union Solidarity, which represents mainly white mine workers, told the South Africa Press Association that it was notified by Lonmin on a firing and restructure process.

"Solidarity will do everything in its power to prevent retrenchments from taking place, because it is unfair for employees that did not participate or instigate the unprotected strike and unlawful protest action, to become the victims of the five weeks of workplace anarchy," spokesman Gideon du Plessis said to SAPA, adding that the target of the restructuring is mostly management.

Physicists study fast-moving electrons in graphene as a model laboratory for massless particles

A team of physicists from Europe and South Africa showed that electrons moving randomly in graphene can mimic the dynamics of particles such as cosmic rays, despite travelling at a fraction of their speed, in a paper about to be published in EPJ B.

Andrey Pototsky and colleagues made use of their knowledge of graphene, which is made of a carbon layer, one atom thick, and packed in a honeycomb lattice pattern. In such material the interaction of electrons with atoms changes the effective mass of the electrons. As a result, the energy of electrons in graphene becomes similar to the photon energy.

Therefore, electrons in graphene can be regarded as behaving like cosmic rays, which belong to a family known as ultra-relativistic particles, even though their actual velocity is one hundred times lower than the speed of light.

The authors employed the classical equations used to describe random motionso-called Brownian motionto study the dynamics of electrons within the confines of their graphene mini-laboratory. They considered different graphene chip geometries and subjected them to changing conditions that affect the way these electrons diffuse through the material, such as temperature and electric field strength.

Going one step further, the authors were able to rectify electron fluctuations and to control the electron motion itself, from an unusual chaotic type of motion to a periodic movement, by varying the electric field.

Future work would experimentally demonstrate how variation of the temperature can be used positively to enhance the performance of graphene chips by gaining a greater control over electron transport. Such graphene mini-labs could also ultimately help us to understand the dynamics of matter and anti-matter in cosmic rays.

Do it yourself PR, part 2 | MomsCharlotte.com

?

Last week, Ask the Mompreneur covered some of the fundamentals of doing your own PR as a business owner.? Specifically:

?

-??????? Shift to a ?news? perspective

-??????? Target the right outlets

-??????? Pitch your story

?

This week, we?ll wrap up this two-part series with some words of advice from Charlotte internet radio host Francoise Rose Jeanes.? Her small business marketing podcast is called Marketing Moxie and can be found at BlogTalkRadio.com.

?

Ask the Mompreneur:

?

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to come on your show to talk about launching my new startup, and I learned a lot about the process of DIY public relations in the process.? As someone who is on the receiving end of pitches from entrepreneurs, what advice do you have for successfully pitching producers, hosts, and journalists?

?

Francoise Rose Jeanes:

?

For my show, the most important thing is that you have to fit the criteria of being an entrepreneur who has achieved success in business and have something valuable to teach.? My purpose for doing the show is to help other business owners learn something, so I?m always looking for people who have an interesting story to tell or experience they want to share.

?

Ask the Mompreneur:

?

How do you usually find your guests?? For example, you and I met online, via the Facebook group Charlotte Area TweetTarts.

?

Francoise Rose Jeanes:

?

I do find guests from online groups and social media and networking events, but my main source is referrals from previous guests.? I think that interesting and successful people will tend to know each other, so I always ask my guests who else they know that they think would be a good fit for the show and that method has worked really well in keeping the pipeline full.

?

Ask the Mompreneur:

?

So it sounds like business owners who want to do their own PR should start by doing their homework and making sure their story really fits the program they are pitching and that they should try to get referred by a previous guest.? Very useful tips.? Now what about things to avoid?

?

Francoise Rose Jeanes:

?

Well, my biggest pet peeve is people who aren?t into building relationships.? For me, each show takes many hours of work to put together, including all the effort I put in before and after the actual interview.? So I?m not really interested in doing all that to help promote someone who?ll never speak to me again.

?

I know that coffees and lunches take time, but I?m a relationship builder, and communicating with people and connecting them to each other is really my passion.? So someone who wants to come on my show, and then be gone is not really the kind of guest I?m looking for.

?

I think the motto of the eWomen Network really puts it best, "Give first, share always."? So if there was one big take away I would want everyone to remember, it would be that.

?

Chris Weidman?s house damaged in Hurricane Sandy

As the country starts to clean up from the devastation from Hurricane Sandy, a UFC fighter will be part of the group who has to deal with wrecked homes. UFC middleweight Chris Weidman's home was damaged when the storm hit Long Island.

UFC light heavyweight Ryan Bader, who has the same manager as Weidman, tweeted that Weidman's home was lost.

Weidman later spoke to MMA Fighting, and confirmed his home was severely damaged. The flooding was up to his chest in some places, and the first floor, backyard, garage and deck are destroyed.

"We lost a lot of stuff but as long as we are healthy that's all that matters. I actually documented a lot through video and pics. We had water up to my chest in some parts of my house."

He will need to deal with the clean up as he prepares for his next fight. Weidman is fighting Tim Boetsch at UFC 155 in late December.

Oil up as US refineries restart after huge storm

(AP) ? The restart of refineries in the storm-hit northeastern United States helped lift oil prices on Thursday.

Benchmark oil for December delivery rose 7 cents at late afternoon Bangkok time to $86.31 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 56 cents to finish at $86.24 per barrel in New York.

Nine oil refineries that make up 8 percent of U.S. refining capacity sit in the region hit by superstorm Sandy. Nearly all were affected by the storm, and two still were not operating late Wednesday.

Crude prices were up "following reports that a number of key Northeastern refineries were back in operation after Hurricane Sandy, which was seen bolstering near term demand for crude oil," CME Group said in an energy market report.

The largest refinery by capacity, Philadelphia Energy Solutions, was in excellent condition and awaiting crude shipments. Normal operations were reported at four other refineries.

Meanwhile, The American Petroleum Institute said crude oil stocks rose by 2.1 million barrels to 371.7 million for the week ending Oct. 26.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, fell 23 cents to $108.47 per barrel in London.

In other trading:

? Heating oil fell 2.2 cents to $3.0406 per gallon.

? Natural gas rose 4 cents to $3.732 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Wholesale gasoline rose 0.5 cents to $2.6076 per gallon.
