Justin Bieber's Tattoo: Singer Debuts New Owl Ink On Instagram ...

By Daniel Bases and Edward Krudy

NEW YORK, Oct 30 (Reuters) - A possible levee breach in northern New Jersey on Tuesday, flooded three towns with 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) of water in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, prompting the evacuation of hundreds from their homes.

The towns of Moonachie, Little Ferry and Carlstadt were underwater after the swollen Hackensack River broke its banks, affecting around 2,000 residents, said Jeanne Baratta, chief of the Bergen County Executive.

Baratta, who was on the scene with emergency personnel, said there was the possibility that the river overflowed its banks rather than broke a levee while a New Jersey State Police spokesman described it as a levee break in the borough of Moonachie.

Seminar for Parents: Brain Foods, Ingredients to Avoid, Smart Foods ...

I?gave a seminar last week to local preschool parents regarding how to choose the right foods to give our kids the healthiest and smartest chance in their early lives.? As a parent there is almost nothing?that I am ore passionate about compared to the health and nutrition of my kids.? I have spent probably?hundreds of hours?over the last 5?years researching everything?to do with kids, pregnancy and nutrition and?I am so excited to share my research?with everyone.?Here is the 7 page outline to remind the parents who were there and hopefully it can provide some insight and tips for those who weren?t?

?

PART I

Smart Foods

First I have to mention the Blood Brain Barrier: This a protective mechanism that we have as adults which is fully developed and protects our brain from excessive chemicals, etc. from entering our brain, however, for kids it is not fully developed which is why it is even more important for kids to eat ?cleaner? more natural foods.

Foods good for learning (calm, focus)

I.???????????? Nutrition and the Brain

  • Brain foods ? The brain is 60% fats and one ???? of the most important things a growing brain needs is high-quality fats. Let?s ???? talk about the ?smart? fats that our kids need daily.
  • Since the brain is 60% fat growing brains need high-quality fats.
    • Smart fats ????? make the brain grow and work better.
    • The best ????? thing you can do to enhance their school experience is to feed their ????? brain properly.? This is the time ????? when they are like sponges and want to learn so with smart foods they ????? will be able to focus better, concentrate, listen and absorb 50% or more ????? better than kids who are eating a diet of very little nutrition and smart ????? fats.
    • What are ????? smart fats?
      • The ?????? omega-3 fatty acids that are found in especially high amounts in
        • Seafood
        • flaxseed ??????? oil
        • chia ??????? seeds
        • hemp ??????? seeds
        • dark ??????? leafy greens
        • nuts ??????? like walnuts and other seeds
        • One of ??????? the best supplements you could give your kids is algae DHA.
        • Coconut, rich in ??????? other good fats
        • Avocado
        • organic goat dairy ??????? (avoid cow?s milk products unless raw)
        • eggs (especially the ??????? yolk)

?

  • The wrong or bad fatscan ???? slow brain activity.
    • hydrogenated oils (examples)
    • fried foods (examples)
    • processed foods rich in refined oils (examples)
    • Foods too high in just omega 6 oils (Canola, safflower, sunflower ????? oil).
    • Cottonseed?oil

The Brain needs fiber and protein-rich carbohydrates.

    • The brain needs ????? carbohydrates that can provide protein and carbohydrates which work ????? together to release slowly into their blood stream and keep their ????? appetite satisfied longer and their energy and endurance nice and steady ????? rather than high sugar rush from bad carbs.
    • Good fiber-rich foods ????? such as whole grains, nuts, seeds, veggies, fruit and beans
  • The wrong carbs can slow ???? brain activity:
    • Examples?sugar, refined ????? grains, artificial sweeteners, soda, etc.

The Brain needs food rich in folic acid

    • Folic acid is so ????? important to insure their brain grows properly and works optimally
    • Good Folic Acid ????? foods include:
      • green leafy vegetables
      • asparagus
      • lentils
      • chickpeas
      • kidney beans
      • artichokes
      • avocados
  • Eat Blue Foods for the Brain
    • Blueberries are a smart brain food and ????? they get their important antioxidants and flavonoids from their dark blue ????? skin.? Helps the brain grow ????? properly.
  • Extra Smart Brain Foods?
  • Blueberries
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Salmon
  • Green leafy veggies like Spinach and kale
  • Excitotoxins, which we will discuss below such as MSG, aspartame, splenda, equal, food colorings, and preservatives, non-organic sprays and pesticides
    • Additives and preservatives
    • Simple carbs that have no fiber and are high in sugar
    • Hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils found in a majority of pre-packaged foods and snacks
    • Sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup, sugar, corn sugar, fructose, glucose, etc., sweetened drinks and even too much straight juice (always dilute)
  • These foods have the ?Dumbest? effect on the ???? brain?
    • make sure it is at ????? least 50% good fats
    • Not only will the good ????? fats help them stay full longer they will also help with focus, attention ????? and learning.
    • Since proteins stimulates the brains, send ????? your kids off to school with a good quality protein, healthy-carb, and ????? good-fat breakfast.
      • Whole grain cereal and yogurt
      • Avo pudding: Use ?????? avocado for a pudding base?My 1 year old loves when I blend avocado with ?????? mangoes, bananas or peaches.
      • Steam an egg yolk for 4 minutes in boiling water and stir into ?????? yogurt
      • Mix nut butters into their yogurt
      • Put coconut oil on everything!
      • Add ground chia seeds to their cereal, yogurt or a smoothie
      • Make smoothies and add lots of good fatty foods to fruit and ?????? coconut water
      • Use plain goat yogurt in sauces and soups to add the good fats ?????? (tastes like sour cream in recipes)
      • Add more protein to each meal and snack

?

Part II: Labels: What to look out for when choosing foods for the brain.

What is MSG? It stands for Monosodium Glutamate. This chemical has been called a preservative, but it is actually a taste enhancer that creates the feeling that you have to eat more. If a food has gone bad, MSG can trick your taste buds so that you think it is still nourishing and fresh. Not only could you be eating rotten food, but it has also been proven that MSG can create harmful side effects.

  • It can damage and create an imbalance in the body?s cardiac, ???? gastrointestinal, circulatory, muscular, and neurological systems. Eating ???? MSG can lead to respiratory, hyperactivity, vision, skin and urinary tract ???? conditions.
  • It is known as an ?excitotoxin? that creates hyperactivity in the ???? brain.
  • Over 90% of kids snacks, cereals and pre-made meals have MSG ???? because they know it will make the kids crave this food and want it all ???? the time.
  • I believe that part of the rise in ADHD is connected to kids eating ???? to many Excitotoxins such as MSG and one of the best natural aids for ???? hyperactivity is the good fats, especially DHA

The average person eats about 5-10 pounds of ?enriched? vitamins, flavors, preservatives, and colored dyes. MSG is one such toxic food additive in almost every process food.? Below is a list of code names that MSG can hide behind in an ingredient list on a package?

  • Natural and Artificial Flavors? MSG is often masked ???? behind the names ?Artificial Flavors? and ?Natural Flavors?, Most ???? processed and packaged foods have over 300 unnatural chemicals hidden ???? behind these 2 terms.

When reading labels note that the following ingredients always contain MSG:

  • hydrolyzed protein
  • sodium cassienate
  • yeast extract
  • maltodextrin
  • autolyzed yeast
  • textured protein
  • calcium cassienate
  • hydrolyzed oat flour
  • Note: Bragg?s Liquid Aminos is a soy sauce ???? replacement that naturally has MSG in it

These ingredients usually contain MSG:

  • Malt extract
  • Malt flavoring
  • Bouillon
  • Barley malt
  • Broth
  • Stock
  • Flavorings
  • Artificial flavorings
  • Natural flavorings
  • Natural beef flavoring
  • Natural chicken flavoring
  • Natural pork flavoring
  • Seasonings
  • Whey protein
  • Carrageenan
  • Smoke flavor
  • Soy protein isolate
  • Soy protein
  • Whey protein
  • Vegetable gum
  • Corn syrup
  • Pectin
  • Note: Soft Drinks, candy, and chewing gum can ???? also be sources of hidden MSG

Here are more specific foods and brands that have additives such as MSG:

Here are a few brands and terms that can have MSG :

  • ? Taco Bell ? seasoned meat
  • Hamburger Helper Doritos
  • Campbell?s soups
  • Pringles (the flavored varieties)
  • Cold cuts ? most non-organic
  • Nathan?s Hotdogs
  • Progresso Soups ?

Snacks and meal ideas

One of the most important keys for a child?s growth is brain health. Smart foods should help your children develop their brains rather take away from your child?s nutritional value.

My approach: Lead with passion, and they will follow.

Criteria for choosing smart foods:

1)??? Nutritional value

2)??? Taste

3)??? Fun

Make the process of choosing foods an interesting and fun learning experience.

How?

1)??? Have them help you shop for it.

2)??? Tell them why you chose it?what it does for you.

3)??? And have them help you make it.

How soon?

The best time to introduce new foods is before they have developed their tastes, so as young as possible.

But?I just want my kids to eat anything. How do I get my kid to eat something healthy, when they won?t eat anything?

If you involve your kids in the choices and tell them why, they generally become more open to eating it.

For example:

Explain the function of the food in a language they can relate to. Kids need to picture healthy, functional foods the same way they see a new pair of shoes. That new pair of shoes helps them run faster and jump higher, just as that pita sandwich with veggies will make them stronger and faster.

First let?s talk about keeping them nutritionally balanced? If you have a picky eater that will only eat pasta, bread, cheese and fruit, you definitely need to be enriching their diet with nutrient-dense foods.

This recipe can vary according to your child?s likes and what you have available. I will give you the base of the smoothie and you can find what works for you?

Superfood Smoothie (make it in front of them, and let them try it) ? bring sample cups.

I know this looks like a lot but it is amazing and not just for kids ? adults too! It is the perfect meal for anyone.

  • The coconut water you can get fresh from the young coconuts or buy already packaged from the health store such as the Zicco, One or Vita Coco brands
  • The hemp or goat milk adds protein, minerals and fats that are easily digested ? this could easily be substituted with other milk of choice
  • The yogurt adds the probiotics and is also a good source of protein and minerals such as calcium
  • The coconut pudding adds healthy fats, protein and minerals and is great for digestion
  • Chia seeds are a powerhouse of nutrients (4x more calcium than milk & high in protein and good fats) and good energy
  • Kidz Superfoodsis tasty and made of over 23 dried organic fruits and vegetables along with dried barley grass and spirulina ? plus it is raw.? This is the best whole food multi I have seen and used for 4 years.

Snacks and meal ideas?

Diabetes: Health Threat That Is Destroying The U.S. : Easy Health ...

Even though diabetes is a preventable and reversible metabolic disease, its prevalence is growing rapidly in the U.S. What is the cause for this continued rise of diabetes?

Comparing the rising prevalence and costs of diabetes nationally, you should know that U.S. expenditures exceeded $2.6 billion in 1969, $137 billion in 1995 and $218 billion in 2011. [1] Diabetes is one of the most preventable of all illnesses. [2] The International Diabetes Association reported[3]:

  • The demographic group that has the greatest number of people with diabetes is between 40 to 59 years of age.
  • Some 183 million people worldwide (50 percent) with diabetes are undiagnosed and don?t know they have it.
  • Diabetes caused 4.6 million deaths worldwide in 2011.

Diabetes Knowledge

We know a lot about diabetes; we?ve been studying it for many decades. With so much educational information available to healthcare providers and patients today, why is diabetes still becoming so widespread?

A look at our medical industry and the authorities on health and disease shows that there is a huge lack of incentives for doctors to teach diabetes prevention. They also do not have incentives to assist you to reverse diabetes through natural and lifestyle means. It?s just too easy to quickly write out a prescription for a drug treatment and get on to their next patient.

The truth is that our current medical system makes money on treatments, but the system does little to cure disease and does not address the causes of illness. As a result, it does very little to reduce costs and suffering.

This very point is made in a September 2012 New England Journal of Medicine article [4] in which the authors state: ?Cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes now cause 70% of U.S. deaths and account for nearly 75% of health care expenditures. Unfortunately, many modifiable risk factors for chronic diseases are not being addressed adequately. A prevention model, focused on forestalling the development of disease before symptoms or life-threatening events occur, is the best solution to the current crisis.? The authors clearly document how lawmakers and the financial rulers of the medical system ignore the causes of illness and give rewards for quick and easy treatments.

The main barriers to effective disease prevention include:

  • The use of piecemeal, task-based doctor care that pays doctors for ?sick visits? that deal with acute conditions or recurring chronic conditions and emphasizes the exclusive use of prescription drugs.
  • Big financial rewards in medicine for doing surgical and procedural interventions and ignoring prevention (i.e., behavior-change counseling).
  • Ignoring subclinical disease before it can be called a true medical diagnosis, thus effectively worsening prognosis and also increasing the need for quick and powerful prescription drugs or surgery treatments.

Systematic Improvements

I know we can do better as a system if we could restructure the entire concept of our current ?sick care? system to one that focuses on ?healthcare.? By advocating prevention, we would be able to reduce the sickness and suffering of current chronic illness, thus allowing individuals to live longer, disease-free lives.

A medical model that concentrates on prevention makes sense. Chronic conditions that make up the bulk of illness in the U.S. take decades to develop. By preventing these conditions, we would see a tremendous benefit in the health of the next generation and still could reverse much of chronic illness through the same methods we use to prevent chronic illness. We could drastically lower the rate of life-threatening conditions (heart attacks, strokes, cancers) and minimize the complications of long-standing diseases that are inadequately treated or ignored.

The good news is that you can look beyond policies and systems to what you already inherently know about disease prevention, especially with type 2 diabetes. You probably know that eating large amounts of refined and processed food can trigger the metabolic process that lead to diabetes. You also know that genetic expression of diabetes can be turned off if you eat a diet centering on raw whole food nutrition. This has been proven by Gabriel Cousens, M.D., at his Arizona-based Tree of Life Institute. I will be discussing this in more detail in a later report, but you can get a taste of this by watching a short movie trailer online at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0Le4VjQPlg.

In my next report I will discuss more in detail about diabetes: how it affects your body, the risk factors for diabetes, and the signs and symptoms of the disease. I?ll also go over complications of diabetes if left untreated.

To feeling good for life,

Michael Cutler, M.D.

Hurricane Sandy shuts down Wall Street trading, markets | Investing ...

Wall Street?s plans for Hurricane Sandy

Wall Street firms are running on skeleton staff today, as stock markets remain closed ahead of Hurricane Sandy?s approach and many traders in other markets as well as other financial professionals worked from home.
Here is a breakdown of what the major financial institutions said about carrying out business on Monday. Read more

Given all the emphasis on stability and investor confidence, operating the market that way didn?t seem to serve the public interest. Why do this? To prove we can? That didn?t seem to make a lot of sense

NEW YORK ? U.S. stock and options markets will be closed on Monday, and possibly Tuesday, as regulators, exchanges and brokers worry about the integrity of markets and the safety of employees in the face of Hurricane Sandy.

Market participants and regulators decided late on Sunday to shut the market, reversing a plan to keep electronic trading going on Monday. Bond markets will remain open, but will close at noon, a trade group said.

Pfizer Inc : rescheduled third quarter results and conference call to Nov. 1, before the bell, from Oct. 30.
Thomson Reuters Corp : rescheduled earnings announcement to Nov. 2 from Oct. 30.
Acorda Therapeutics Inc: rescheduled thirdquarter financial results and conference call to Oct. 31 from Oct. 30.
Systemax Inc: rescheduled third quarter earnings announcement to Nov. 1, after the market. The Company will host an earnings teleconference at 5 p.m. Eastern Time on that day.
MSC Industrial Direct Co Inc: rescheduled its fiscal fourthquarter results to Oct. 31 from Oct. 30.
Kaman Corp : Rescheduled third quarter results to Oct. 31, after the bell. A webcast and conference call will be held at 8:30 am Eastern Time on Nov. 1.
Entergy Corp : rescheduled third quarter earnings conference call to Nov. 5 from Oct. 30.
NRG Energy Inc : rescheduled third quarter earnings conference call to Nov. 2 from Oct. 31.

The decision to close stock and options markets came after regulators, exchanges, and dealers discussed the unknowns that would have been tested if the markets opened on Monday, three sources familiar with the situation said.

For example, NYSE Euronext?s New York Stock Exchange had initially planned to shut its physical trading floor, which would have meant operating as an all-electronic exchange for the first time.

?It was a judgment decision based on the safety of a lot of market participants, especially as the storm seems to be getting more severe,? said Larry Leibowitz, chief operating officer of NYSE Euronext, in a phone interview. ?Given all the emphasis on stability and investor confidence, operating the market that way didn?t seem to serve the public interest. Why do this? To prove we can? That didn?t seem to make a lot of sense.?

The decision to shut down the stock markets came after Wall Street had prepared to open for business on Monday with limited staffing after a mass transit shut-down in New York, booking hotel rooms for key employees and leaning on offices in other cities.

Wall Street banks, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Citigroup Inc, activated their emergency plans, which many firms put in place after the September 11, 2001, attacks. It was not immediately clear if those plans had also changed.

Some bank offices in lower Manhattan?s Financial District are in evacuation zones and most non-critical staff and employees who don?t rely on high-speed systems, including some investment bankers, were asked to work from home.

The last time the NYSE cut trading hours for weather was Jan. 8, 1996, when a blizzard dropped more than 20 inches on New York City. It last closed for a full day for weather when Hurricane Gloria hit on Sept. 27, 1985. Markets have not closed for four days in a row since the start of 2007 when, following a weekend and the New Year?s Day holiday on a Monday, they shut on Jan. 2 to observe a day of mourning for President Gerald Ford?s death the previous week.

?Everybody wants to get the markets open,? the NYSE?s Leibowitz said. ?We all know how important this is and we take the decision seriously. People expect the markets will be resilient and able to operate. The tenet is that the markets should be open if at all possible.?

?SUPER STORM?

The storm is expected to slam into the U.S. East Coast on Monday night, bringing torrential rain, high wind, severe flooding and power outages. The rare ?super storm? ? created by an Arctic jet stream wrapping itself around a tropical storm ? could be the biggest to hit the U.S. mainland, forecasters said.

The scramble started early as the threat of the storm forced the New York mass transit system to shut down on Sunday evening, leaving tens of thousands of employees stuck at home.

About 8.5 million commuters use the Metropolitan Transit Authority?s transit lines daily, meaning most Wall Street employees would be unable to get to work. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg also closed public schools and ordered an evacuation of 375,000 people in coastal areas, including downtown offices of banks such as Citigroup.

The major exchanges and most big trading firms have alternate trading facilities if downtown Manhattan is inaccessible, but the storm?s wide path may affect a number of sites in the New York metropolitan area. Authorities have warned of possible widespread power outages that could last for days.

Wall Street was spared the worst of Hurricane Irene in August last year. Officials had feared Hurricane Irene would flood lower Manhattan and cripple business in the world?s financial capital, but the flooding was minor and there were no major disruptions at the exchanges.

All of the U.S. exchanges, as well as major broker-dealers, and regulators were involved in the decision to close the markets, according to several executives at exchanges and financial firms.

The U.S. markets have seen three high-profile snafus this year, beginning with the failed IPO of BATS Global Markets, the No. 3 U.S. equities exchange, on its own exchange; Facebook Inc?s botched markets debut on Nasdaq?s exchange; and a software glitch that cost trading firm Knight Capital well over US$400 million, nearly forcing it into bankruptcy.

BOND MARKETS

The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association said earlier on Sunday it is recommending an early close of noon EDT on Monday for the trading of U.S. dollar-denominated, fixed-income securities. It said its member firms should decide for themselves whether their fixed-income departments remain open for trading.

The foreign exchange market?s activity generally follows the fixed income markets.

The New York Federal Reserve has calls scheduled for early Monday morning with dealers to see what each dealer is doing to cope with the storm, and will modify its market activities accordingly.

In Washington, the Commerce Department said it would post its report on personal income and spending for September on its website at 8:30 a.m. as scheduled, even though the federal government was closed.

The Federal Reserve said it would postpone its regularly scheduled releases, including its weekly report on selected interest rates and daily commercial paper data. The Fed said it would release the data when federal offices in the Washington area reopened.

CME Group Inc said it will be closing its U.S. equity index futures and equity index options on futures markets on the trading floor and on CME Globex at 8:15 a.m., Central Time, on Monday. All other CME Group futures and options on futures markets will remain open.

IntercontinentalExchange Inc said trading in the ICE Futures Russell equity index futures and options will close early, at 9:15 a.m. Eastern Time on Monday. It said ICE Clear Credit will close at noon Eastern Time on Monday, with the U.S. fixed income markets. It said all other ICE markets and clearing houses will remain open and follow regular market hours.

WORK FROM HOME

Goldman, whose office in lower Manhattan is in one of the areas to be evacuated, told employees earlier on Sunday that it would open for business, with some staff working from offices in Greenwich, Connecticut, and in Princeton, New Jersey. It also plans to use teams in London and other locations around the world for support.

Citigroup, which has three buildings in the evacuation zone, said ?non-critical personnel should invoke their work-from-home strategies.?

JPMorgan Chase & Co said its buildings were still open Monday and the bank was planning to be fully operational, using resources in the United States, Europe and Asia.

For many investment bankers and private equity executives, working from home will make the most sense. Blackstone Group planned to close its office on Monday.

Hurricane Sandy also led to some events being canceled or postponed. Citigroup Prime Brokerage postponed a hedge fund event that had been scheduled for Tuesday.

Roku update adds cross-provider search over Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, Vudu and Crackle

Roku update adds crossprovider search across Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, Vudu and Crackle

We've seen web portals that let you search for TV and movies on the internet across different services, but a new update for Roku is bringing that capability directly to its set-top boxes. Whether you're searching by movie, TV show, actor or director it will sniff out related content across some of the higher profile services it offers, including Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Crackle, Vudu and HBO Go. The new Roku Search function is front and center (once your second gen HD or higher player has been updated to the latest version) and in our tests worked quickly, pulling up content wherever it was available and mentioning if it was available in HD. The only downside is navigating the onscreen keyboard via remote, although you can always sub in your mobile device thanks to those recently upgraded remote apps for iOS and Android. All in all Roku says it can reach its tendrils across around 130,000 titles and almost 100,000 actors and directors. Check after the break for a couple of screenshots and a quick demo video, hit the official blog for more info or force an update on your hockey puck to check it out yourself.
