Police say Moses, a masked gunman who set fire to his home before shooting five members of a Southern California family was in a dispute with the victims, Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012. Inglewood Police Chief Mark Fronterotta said a manhunt continues for 55-year-old Desmond John Moses after early Saturday's shooting rampage, which left a father and his 4-year-old son dead and three others wounded. (AP Photo/ Inglewood (Calif.) Police Dept.)

(AP) ? An autopsy was pending on a charred body found in the Southern California bungalow belonging to a gunman accused of breaking into a neighbor's home and shooting five family members, killing two of them.

Investigators were still gathering information and the autopsy has not yet been scheduled, Lt. Cheryl MacWillie with the Los Angeles County coroner's office said Sunday.

The shooting rampage before dawn Saturday in Inglewood killed 33-year-old Filimon Lamas and his 4-year-old son. The father was shielding two of his children when he was shot, Inglewood Police Chief Mark Fronterotta said. Lamas' 28-year-old wife, Gloria Jiminez, was shot in both legs but managed to carry the wounded 4-year-old out of the house.

Paramedics found her collapsed on the street. The child, who suffered a bullet wound to the head, died at a hospital.

"Their efforts were certainly heroic," the chief said. He called the shooting spree a horrific crime.

Investigators believed Desmond John Moses, 55, set his own home ablaze before entering the family's home around 4 a.m. wearing a dark cap and a white painter's mask.

Authorities said he fired 10 times. In addition to the deaths of the father and child and injury to the mother, a 7-year-old girl was wounded in the chest and a 6-year-old boy suffered a bullet wound in the pelvis. An 8-year-old boy escaped injury.

The mother and daughter remained hospitalized in stable condition, Inglewood Police Lt. James Madia said. The 6-year-old boy was released.

Authorities announced late Saturday night that the body was found during a search of the badly burned bungalow, which took hours because it was packed with debris.

"He was kind of a hoarder or pack rat," Madia said.

He said police planned to continue looking for Moses until an autopsy can identify the body.

Madia said Moses lived in the bungalow for 17 years, while the family lived in the front house for 8 years.

Fronterotta would not discuss the nature of the dispute, but the property owner told the Los Angeles Times that Moses had been fighting an eviction notice and recently lost his case in court.

A woman who knew the family, Judy Castellanos, told the Times that the suspect was reclusive and would not let anyone look inside his home.

"He had been asked to leave by the end of this month," she told the newspaper.

After the shooting, police evacuated about 15 nearby houses to search for Moses while firefighters and investigators sifted through Moses' bungalow to determine whether he returned there after the shooting.

The names of the family members have not been released pending notification of relatives.

Euro edges up on Spanish aid hopes, shares weak

LONDON (Reuters) - The euro crept up 0.3 percent versus the dollar on Monday as a win for Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in elections in his home region was seen as clearing one obstacle to Madrid seeking international aid.

But slow progress towards a banking union in the 17-member euro area and worries about agreement over a common budget for the whole European Union limited the gains.

"There will remain uncertainty on Spain's bailout request. And if it does, the market may think that the euro will have run out of euro-positive factors," said Minori Uchida, chief forex analyst at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.

Meanwhile the dollar touched a three-month high against the yen of 79.680 yen, on rising speculation of more monetary easing by the Bank of Japan following a more than 10 percent drop in Japanese exports in September.

The bigger than expected fall in Japanese exports followed weak Chinese trade data and comes ahead of October purchasing managers' reports this week that could reignite concerns over global growth.

European share markets pulled back on concerns over the economic outlook and its impact on corporate earnings. The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was down 0.2 percent at 1,109.43 points.

London's FTSE 100 , Paris's CAC-40 and Frankfurt's DAX all opened down around 0.2 percent.

U.S. stock index futures, however, pointed to a recovery on Wall Street, which had its worst day since late June on Friday when U.S. economic bellwethers General Electric and McDonald's both disappointed investors with their results.

Brent crude edged up towards $111 a barrel having already seen four days of decline on the worries over the fragile health of the global economy.

Brent crude for December delivery had risen 0.5 percent to $110.61 per barrel, while U.S. oil was up 0.4 percent at $90.47 a barrel.

In a Broken Student Aid System, Colleges Are Part of the Problem

Editor?s Note: This post was written by Jeff Selingo, a member of Education Sector?s K20 Task Force. Selingo, editor at large of The Chronicle of Higher Education, will be blogging regularly on The Quick & the Ed.

Chalk up yet another way families are being tapped out to pay for college: parent loans.

The amount of money distributed by the federal government through its main loan program for parents, the Plus loan, has more than doubled to $10.6 billion since 2000. Nearly twice as many borrowers are also taking out loans, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education and ProPublica. The Parent PLUS Loan, with an interest rate close to 8 percent, is essentially the last choice for parents desperate to send their sons and daughters to their first-choice school.

Families are looking under the couch cushions for pennies to pay for college these days, and higher-education institutions are searching every corner of campus for new revenue sources to finance their rising costs. The situation meets the definition of an unsustainable model for the future?for students, parents, and colleges.

In debates over college affordability, much is made about the cost side of the equation. But even if we find a magic-bullet solution, it?s unlikely to cut tuition prices in half overnight. We?ll still need to figure out how to pay the annual tuition bills with financial aid.

But the financial-aid system we currently have in place is severely broken. State and federal governments continue to pour money into the system even though we know little about what students actually learn for those dollars, if they finish at all. Institutions, especially private colleges, waste money on merit aid in a prestige race to pursue top-ranked students who would probably be better off at more selective schools and would likely go to college no matter how much aid they get.

To some colleges, financial aid has become little more than a marketing tool to fill a class. I saw that on full display last spring when I met with a small group of high-school seniors and their parents at a high school in Florida. It was a little more than week before the May deadline when they had to commit to a college, and they had brought their financial-aid offers from colleges so they could review them with counselors.

As a counselor went through the offers with one student and his mother, he glanced at his own homemade cheat sheet, and I quickly discovered why. Deciphering financial aid letters is almost impossible. Each uses different formats, difficult-to-understand abbreviations or mixes together loans and grants, blurring the lines between the two and creating confusion. The worst offenders suggest students are getting a great deal.

But no one polices these practices. Unlike when we buy a car or a house or sign up for a credit card, there are no standardized disclosure forms schools are required to hand out. The Obama administration has proposed a shopping sheet that all colleges should be required to use when they notify students about their aid packages. Ten colleges and universities have already committed to the model format.

While a good start, the biggest problem with the financial-aid system is timing. The college search starts as early as middle school for some students these days. By the time they reach their junior year of high school they often have their hearts set on a particular campus.

Families know little about what they will actually pay for college and, more important, exactly how they will finance it until a few weeks before a final decision needs to be made. During this period?March and April of the senior year of high school?the sales rhetoric from colleges turns to cold-blooded financial reality. Under pressure, families sometimes make bad financial decisions: students because they don?t know any better and parents because they don?t want to disappoint their sons and daughters.

It?s clear to me that the needed reforms for student financial-aid are unfortunately not going to come from higher education. Many financial-aid officials remain opposed to the model letter, as well as many other regulations.

Last week, I spoke to the annual meeting of the New York State association of college financial-aid advisors last week and several of them told me that they already feel over-regulated. A few said that even if they feel students are over-borrowing or a bad financial fit for the institution they feel unable to say anything because they work for the institution, not the families. Instead of being resources for students and parents, financial-aid offices at colleges have become just another cog in the wheel that brings students in the door.

How Online PR Can Help Promote Your Business

Considering investing in Online PR for your business? It would seem like a wise move, with over 2.3 billion people worldwide now listed as internet users, you?re dealing in a crowded marketplace. This means that anything you can do to make your business stand out and leap up search engine rankings can only help you grow and become more profitable.

Use Press Releases for Better Business Opportunities

But why is Online PR a solid investment? And how can it help your business? Here are 10 tips on how Online PR can help promote your business:

1. Your Search Engine Ranking Will Improve

The more press releases, news articles and blogs you post online and the more sites you place them on, the more links you are building. This in turn will increase your SEO (Search engine optimisation) and quickly push your website up the search engine rankings. This leads to more prominence, more traffic and hopefully more customers.

2. It Will Drive Traffic To Your Website

Once you?ve invested in online PR, people will instantly be directed to your company?s website. Good online PRs will employ a number of methods and hopefully drive people to your website. This will improve your online visibility.

3. Press Releases Aren?t Just Read By Journalists Anymore

Traditionally, press releases promoting your company would have only reached a handful of news journalists, and even then, were competing with hundreds of other such items for their attention. Now, any press releases you send out can reach influential bloggers, online media around the world and even consumers directly. This means that press releases now have to be written in a style that makes it accessible to everyone, especially the consumer, but also means that their chances of being picked up are much larger.

4. Your Content Stays Online

Unlike traditional media or paper-based press releases, when you release a piece of content it can, in theory, stay online indefinitely. If you?re promoting a new product, people will still be able to search for it in a year?s time and although it may fall down search engine rankings, unless its deliberately taken down, it?ll still be available to read.

5. Online PR Can Speed Up Your Response To Breaking Stories

Previously, the time lag between a press release or news article hitting the media would be a minimum of two days, but now it can be a matter of minutes. You can issue your information at any time or the day and someone, somewhere in the world, will be able to read it instantly. This is especially helpful if you want to respond to something that?s been released into the news agenda. Say your firm was affected by a change in the Budget, or a big Government announcement; you could create a response and publish it as quickly as you wanted, meaning you can still be part of the news agenda with no two day time-lag.

6. Your Content Can Also Be Promoted On Social Networks

Another option to make your content available to millions of potential customers is to promote it on social networks. Facebook has one billion users and Twitter has over 500 million and simply including details of your presence on each of these social networks on your output can aid the process of users sharing your information.

7. You Can Get Instant Feedback From Customers

As soon as a press release has hit the internet, potential customers are able to give you their honest feedback. They could send you a tweet, comment under a blog post or share the content. Investing in online PR will allow you to keep track of this and obtain priceless feedback from your consumers, something that you would normally be required to spend many thousands of pounds on in market research.

8. It?s Far More Cost Effective Than Traditional PR

As well as having a far wider reach than any traditional media outlet ever could, online PR is also a lot more cost-effective. Overheads for raw materials like print production and postage costs are eradicated completely as all you need to work is a laptop and a working internet connection.

9. You Can Position Yourself And Your Business As An Experts

Regular producing blogs and articles on a particular topic and publishing them on your website can quickly fortify your reputation as being an industry expert. This can lead to media requests for expert comments and, in the minds of customers when they deciding which products to purchase, they are far more likely to trust a company which they consider to be an expert in the field.

10. You Can Present Your Product In A Much Wider Variety Of Media

Whereas in the past, most businesses were limited to press releases and the physical distribution of products. Now, the world is pretty much your oyster; you can produce your own podcast, create a video (which, with some very good online PR will go viral), do a live webchat with customers or anything else you can think of.

Taping of NBC's 'Fashion Star' halted by picketers

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Union picketing has brought a temporary halt to second-season production of the NBC reality show "Fashion Star."

About 70 members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees picketed the show Saturday at Hollywood Center Studios, prompting producers to cancel a taping and dismiss a studio audience.

IATSE official Vanessa Holtgrew told the Hollywood Reporter the union was striking against the show until a contract is reached.

The union allows members to work on the non-union "Fashion Star," but they get no pension and health benefits without a union contract.

IATSE is fighting to keep a foothold as union-heavy productions like feature films in Los Angeles increasingly give way to productions that tend to be non-union like reality shows.

NBC and the show's three production companies had no immediate comment.

jason decaires taylor urban reef Where the Fishes Sleep: Underwater Homes Shelter Wildlife

Artist Jason deCaires Taylor is no stranger to the otherworldly underwater environment. In fact, he has created some of the most amazing, ethereal scenes one can ever see beneath the surface. Now, he is turning his attention to architecture?in a way. The homes he created are actually meant to be used as homes by a variety of underwater creatures.

(all images via: Jason deCaires Taylor)The Urban Reef project is located just off the coast of Cancun, Mexico. At a depth of eight meters, a small group of houses stands silent and seemingly empty. However, they are in reality teeming with life. The artist built these houses to supplement the vanishing underwater coral habitats of fish and crustaceans.

underwater urban reef Where the Fishes Sleep: Underwater Homes Shelter Wildlife

The coral in the area has been steadily dying off due to increased ocean pollution. The coral is an important part of the ecosystem that helps to keep the coastline healthy while providing a home for underwater creatures. Those creatures are left homeless without it, which is just what Jason deCaires Taylor is trying to remedy.

Part of the appeal of the underwater houses is their similarity to our own above-ground abodes. The homes look very similar to human houses, but they have features that make them ideal for their unique setting. Special openings encourage marine life to use the sculptures as homes while other details promote the growth of new, natural coral.

Lebanon MPs commend president?s statements on weapons

March 14 MP Boutros Harb on Sunday saluted President Michel Suleiman for his recent statements on non-state weapons.

?Suleiman?s stance [reflects] the [situation] in Lebanon and the aspirations of the Lebanese people,? Harb told LBC television.

Harb also said that the president?s stances preserve the country?s sovereignty.

On Sunday, the National News Agency quoted Suleiman as saying that work was underway to eventually make the army ?the sole possessor of weapons to defend Lebanon against any threat.??
?
Last week, Suleiman also said that the arms of the Iranian- and Syrian-backed Hezbollah should not be confused with the arms of resistance, and that the latter fall within a national defense strategy, while arms used domestically by any party must be confiscated.

Meanwhile, Public Works and Transportation Minister Ghazi Aridi, who represents the Progressive Socialist Party in the cabinet, said that Suleiman?s statements were ?patriotic and balanced.?

?The president [has taken] clear stances, but maybe [those who reject his stances] are [still] used to the [performances] of other [presidents],? Aridi told LBC.

Aridi added that ?what matters is that we move forward to a serious discussion on the issue of weapons during the [upcoming] national dialogue sessions.?
