If Financing is Marriage, is M&A Death?

cypress hillNot a week goes by where I don?t get an email that goes like this: ?I wanted to reconnect, as I've recently left [the company that bought my startup]. ?Long story, but suffice it to say their executives and I did not share the same vision for the future.? Let?s face it, although there have been some smashing successes, more often than not, Mergers & Acquisitions fail.? If you didn?t know any better, you?d think that selling your company amounted to a kiss of death, when it ought to be closer to a rebirth and the start of something? better.? Indeed, while raising money from investors feels like marriage, M&A sure feels like death.

98% Jiro Dreams of Sushi

Jiro Dreams of Sushi is a mouth watering, passionate documentary about the worlds' most acclaimed Sushi chef, and I'm not sure whether to recommend eating first, or going to the film hungry. No sushi that you have at your local $6.99 lunch special could possibly live up to the ideals (just by looking at his creations) that the obsessive compulsive Jiro reveals on director Gelb's HD camera. No sushi at your $100 per person with Sake will live up to it either. The quiet reverence in which Jiro is held by all the characters in the film, (a food critic, his sushi chef sons - terrified of letting down their fathers exacting legacy, the fish market and rice vendors) eventually rubs off on any viewer of this film. The man's obsessive compulsion and striving for excellence, even in his 85th year are truly humbling, especially for those of us who feel like we are too easy going and need to work on our attention to detail. The film delves into Jiro's early life. He was born poor and abandoned by his parents, yet possessed an inexorable inner drive that carried him to the height of sushi making. The film implies that this inner drive is innate, and makes me wish I had more of it myself. However, the film doesn't quite reveal how Jiro became Jiro. This much is clear - the man simply will not settle for anything less than full blown excellence, from the tunas he buys for his shop, to the work of his revolving door of apprentices and most emotionally, his terrified yet proud sons. He has no interests in life, except for making better and better sushi, and as in the title, this is what he sees in his dreams. Therefore, I'm not sure he'd be the most delightful company at a party but he's great company in this film. The film opens up at the fish market with Jiro's son shopping for the days ingredients, and a strange, mostly unexplained trip that Jiro makes to meet his childhood friends in his home village (that where the above mentioned grave scene takes place). He is like a hometown boy made good and everyone gets their picture taken with the maestro.Gelb uses a very simple storytelling technique by letting the players tell their own stories as pertaining to Jiro. Jiro himself is open and self critical, and answers all questions honestly, but he is not a poetic man with any kind of Freudian insight to his inner workings. We can see him at the grave of his parents, dutifully honoring them, then under his breath he says 'I don't know why I take care of them. They never took care of me.' A staggering and deep insight, one of the only ones in the film, but that's all you get. As for style, it effective but not very arty or pretentious. Gelb lets the HD sushi in close ups tell their own delicious story. As for people, we are mostly in close ups, and close quarters at Jiro's joint. Amazingly, Jiro does not have a lavish restaurant, but a hole in the wall in the lobby of an office building where he serves her creations at a 10 seat establishment that is reserved at least a month in advance. The film is very narrowly focused, and it does not hold interest for its entire 81 minute running time. It would been a more effective piece at about an hour or less, but I recommend it most highly, though it may not appeal much to non-foodies.

Portland Pest Control - Tips to Avoid Termite Infestations

Termites are some of the most notorious pests to plague homeowners. If you have an undetected invasion, then it could become a very expensive problem to fix. Here are some tips that will help you avoid termite infestations.

These pests will need a water supply in order to survive. It is important for you to have no water leaks around your home, or it will invite them to come and stay. It does not matter if the water is leaking inside or somewhere outside. Get the problem fixed immediately. Chimney flashing and leaky pipes are common problems that help attract termites.

It is also important for you to keep your home from harboring too much moisture. Make sure you keep all of the rooms well-ventilated.

Termites need cellulose in the wood to survive. If there is wood on your home that comes into contact with the ground, then it will give them easier access. This is a common problem for homeowners who have decks made of certain materials.

One of the most important things you need to do is keep firewood stored far enough away from your home. After infesting the firewood, they may decide to travel a short distance to your home if it is too close.

Termites love to build nests in dead trees and plants. You should never just let them sit there to rot away. It is best for you to dig up the roots and get rid of the tree entirely. Speaking of this, it is also important for you to be careful when it comes to the landscaping around your home. It may be best to avoid using wood chips for mulch since termites would love to munch on it.

Cracks in your home can allow all sorts of pests to enter including termites. Periodically check your foundation, windows, doors, and other areas for entry pointsthese pests can use to invade your home. Do not procrastinate when it comes to repairing a problem you find.

Many homeowners have wood siding, and many more have real wood on their roofs. Make sure you inspect these areas periodically. If any of the shingles or pieces of siding have started to rot, then you will need to remote them as soon as possible.

Even with the best measures, you may still have a termite infestation at some point. To keep problems to a minimum, it is best for you to have your home inspected by a qualified pest control professional on a regular basis.

'A Voice' In Nicki Minaj's Head Told Her To Quit Twitter

'I had 11 million followers and I hope they will wait for me,' Minaj says, hinting at a return to the site.

As of Friday afternoon (April 20), Nicki Minaj has been absent from Twitter for five days, keeping the Barbz on a sharp lookout for her return.

Minaj temporarily deleted the account in a fit of frustration on Sunday, but during her current press run in the U.K., she admits that she's still pondering if or when she will get back on the social media site. In an interview with Graham Norton, Nicki explained that one of the many personalities in her head — we're assuming it wasn't Roman this time — told her to quit Twitter.

"A voice in my head told me to delete my Twitter and that's what I did," she said, adding, "I had 11 million followers and I hope they will wait for me."

Norton specifically asked when she planned to get back on her timeline, but she wouldn't confirm anything, telling him, "I don't know yet, I'm thinking about it. I miss my Barbz, please bear with me."

Nicki disappeared from Twitter over the weekend after getting into a spat with one of her fan sites, NickiDaily, which she took issue with for posting leaked music from her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded album. "Like seriously, it's but so much a person can take. Good f---ing bye," she wrote before signing off indefinitely.

The leak was Nicki's breaking point, but it's very possible that she was also getting fed up with some of the feedback she's been receiving since she dropped Roman Reloaded.

For now, Barbz shouldn't be too worried about Nicki being permanently absent from Twitter. She will be able to reactivate her account even after several weeks of inactivity, and thanks to her verified status, no one will be allowed to inherit her @NickiMinaj handle without the permission of Twitter employees.

Do you think Nicki should reactivate her Twitter account? Tell us in the comments!

Plastic plates and food trays. I just can?t do it anymore. Trust me, I did for a while. Yes, they say ?dishwasher safe? on the bottom, but as I gradually watched the paint peel off of them in wash after wash, I started to get a bit freaked out. As I once read somewhere, dishwasher safe means safe for your dishwasher ? not necessarily you. Add to that concern the effects (both known and unknown) that piping hot food has when it comes into contact with plastic, and it?s good enough reason to rethink how you serve your food. One side of me says, we?ll I?ve made it to this age and heaven knows that I must have drank from and eaten off of much worse over the past 30 or so years, but with age also comes wisdom and in my opinion, stainless steel and glass are the best people-safe options for food.

Wall Street up on earnings but tech, banks weigh

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks mostly rose on Friday, led by solid earnings from McDonald's, General Electric and Microsoft, but declines in banks and technology shares pulled indexes from their day's highs.

The Nasdaq Composite fell as SanDisk Corp led a drop in semiconductor shares with an 11.3 percent slide after its second revenue warning in as many quarters.

Apple Inc's more than 2.4 percent fall also weighed, as shares continue to struggle ahead of earnings next week. Apple shares posted back-to-back weekly declines of more than 4 percent for the first time since late December 2008.

As earnings season moves into high gear, the first wave of corporate results has been substantially stronger than expected. About 81 percent of S&P 500 companies that have reported so far have beat expectations, according to Thomson Reuters data.

The impressive rate of beats comes amid lowered expectations, but the earnings have helped stocks regain their footing after a recent pullback on less-than-inspiring U.S. economic figures and renewed worry about Europe's debt crisis.

Analysts said the weakness heading into Friday's close was in part because of caution ahead of an early indicator of China's industrial activity, expected late Sunday.

"We already know earnings are coming in better, and the market has been up quite a bit," said Doreen Mogavero, president and chief executive of Mogavero Lee & Co. in New York.

"The private-sector manufacturing data from China will be setting the pace for next week, so people are taking some profits off the table," she said.

A weaker level in China's HSBC flash purchasing managers index late in March sent equity and other risk markets lower.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 65.16 points, or 0.50 percent, to 13,029.26. The S&P 500 Index gained 1.61 points, or 0.12 percent, to 1,378.53. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 7.11 points, or 0.24 percent, to 3,000.45.

For the week, the Dow gained 1.4 percent, the S&P 500 added 0.6 percent and the Nasdaq fell 0.4 percent, down for a third week running.

Bank of America Corp fell 4.7 percent to $8.36 after a downgrade from CLSA analyst Mike Mayo. The shares led declines in the S&P financials group , the second-worst performing among the S&P 500 top 10 sectors.

Microsoft Corp jumped 4.5 percent to $32.42 and was the top boost to the Dow on Friday, a day after its profit report beat Wall Street's expectations.

General Electric Co's results drove buying in industrial shares. The company said it expects double-digit earnings for the year, which helped shares rise 1.1 percent to $19.36.

Industrial conglomerate Honeywell International Inc reported higher quarterly profit and raised its 2012 earnings forecast. The stock rose 2.4 pct to $59.39.

The S&P industrial sector index , up 0.8 percent, was a top boost to the S&P 500.

McDonald's Corp edged up 0.7 percent to $95.94 after the world's No. 1 fast-food chain reported higher quarterly profit, helped by strong U.S. sales.

About 6.68 billion shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and NYSE Amex, just shy of the 6.78 billion daily average so far this year.

Almost two issues rose on the NYSE for every one that fell, and despite the day's decline, three issues rose for every two that fell on the Nasdaq.
