Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse | dr. paul hokemeyer

This evening I?m on a panel of experts who are discussing the film Tyson at Stony Brook University. Tyson, is a film about legendary boxer Mike Tyson and his struggles in life. The film graphically explores Mr. Tyson?s addictions and the role domestic violence played in his relationships with women.

As an addictions and relationship therapist, I?m grateful for Mr. Tyson?s and Sony Pictures? willingness to discuss a sensitive topic. Too many women and families live in the fear, isolation and destruction left in domestic violence?s wake. If we are to end this abuse, we must be willing to discuss it openly and provide families with a way out of the emotional and physical prisons that domestic violence and substance abuse disorders create.

Domestic violence and substance abuse disorders share a number of characteristics. These include loss of control, continuation of behavior in spite of negative consequences, obsessive thoughts, increased tolerance of the abuse, and impact on the entire family (Irons & Schneider, 1997). In addition, we think domestic violence and substance abuse doesn?t occur in nice families or neighborhoods like ours. In fact, both addictions and domestic violence are blind to economics, religion, race or social class. They occur everywhere with all too much frequency.

I look forward to my opportunity to discuss this film tonight with my colleagues. I see it as another step in eradicating the silence and secrecy surrounding these destructive disorders.

The Twitter IPA: What Does ?Defensive? Really Mean?

bicycle patentTwitter is an innovative company, and today?s introduction of the?Innovator?s Patent Agreement shows that their legal department can be innovative too. The Innovator?s Patent Agreement, a?draft of which?was released on GitHub, will allow inventors to retain control of their inventions to make sure that they are only used for defensive purposes. This new agreement is a clear PR and recruiting win for Twitter, but whether it will be anything more is debatable. At first glance, the?Innovator?s Patent Agreement?is a huge derivation from the standard assignment model, where an employee assigns all of their rights in an idea to their employer. ?In today?s climate, where many developers openly dislike the patent system, this new agreement may be a game changer. ?Recently, a Yahoo developer?openly lamented?the use of his technology in Yahoo?s lawsuit against Facebook. ?The?Innovator?s Patent Agreement?appears to be Twitter?s direct response to that mindset. ?Thus, the most likely initial result will be the use of this agreement as a recruitment tool. ?Indeed, in Twitter?s blog post Twitter asks interested developers to #Jointheflock.

Txtr Fights Amazon/Apple With iPhone/Android eBooks For The Rest Of Us

txtrWhile Apple, Amazon and competition authorities globally tussle over book pricing, a fleet-of foot startup is quietly building an alternative platform others would do well to check out. txtr is one of the largest independent eBook platforms in Europe. The Berlin based startup began back in 2008, deciding, as one did back then, to bring out an eReading device called the "txtr reader". I actually saw some of the early units. However, as colleague John Biggs noted in 2009, there wasn't much point in doing devices without a store. And so they've since switched pretty successfully to a BtoB business model, backed by large investor 3M. Now they are cleverly expanding around into the nooks and crannies so far unpopulated by the 800 pound gorillas, and have their own iPhone and Android apps to prove it.

From BPC Technologies, Inc. Wiki

If your computer is running slow, we usually think that it is time to replace or upgrade our PC. However , the reason behind your slow computer may lay in your Windows registry being too crowded with unnecessary entries if this is the case, then a registry cleaner will solve the problem. As you use your computer, your registry gets filled with unnecessary entries and this causes your computer to slow down. A registry cleaner will remove unnecessary files in the registry and repair any errors so that your computer will begin performing well again. After using the registry cleaner, you may be surprised at how your computer starts running as if it were new again, and replacing it is no longer necessary. While there are many registry cleaners available, we will focus on exactly what has been called by users as one of the best in the market, CCleaner. While RegMachine is easier to use and Registry Medic has better technical support, CCleaner has one big advantage over the two of them: it is freeware that can readily be downloaded. But of course, the fact that it is free is not the only reason it is highly ranked - CCleaner also has a good search engines among registry cleaner utilities almost as powerful as the RegCure. The software's scan engine performs two total scans - the first is the conventional scan done by almost all cleaners that identifies and eliminated unwanted files in the registry. The second scan, however , filters out certain suspect files from the first scan and examines if issues would arise if they are removed. This confirmatory second scan thus safeguards the sincerity of your Windows O. H. by not accidentally removing useful files. This dual scan feature is what lifts CCleaner's rankings above the rest but still is not even close to exactly what RegCure does. RegCure has his power regularly updated with the latest database of registry errors to ensure that your PC is fully protected. And provides a real technical support. Richard A. Woods is a Senior Computer Programmer and Analyst for the last 18 years. Find out which is the Registry Cleaner Reviews to get your computer working at top speed!

Sony NEX-FS700 cinema camera hands-on (video)

http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/15/sony-nex-fs700-hands-on/

Sony's otherwise dull pre-NAB press conference yielded one gem -- the NEX-FS700 cinema camera -- which the company announced earlier this month. The FS700 doesn't include 4K shooting functionality out of the box, but it is 4K capable, with the appropriate software coming later in the form of a firmware update. The camera includes the familiar Sony E-mount, bringing with it compatibility with interchangeable lenses, including the standard 18-200mm lens attached to the demo camera at today's event. There's also a trio of ND filters on board -- 1/64ND, 1/16ND and 1/4ND -- along with some impressive slow-motion capabilities, ranging from 120 to 240 frames-per-second in 1080p, going all the way up to 960fps if you're willing to sacrifice full-HD resolution. Company reps confirmed that the camera is expected to retail for "under $10,000" when it hits the market in June, while that 4K update should hit before the year is out, once Sony's external recorder becomes available. The body itself looks very similar to its predecessor, the NEX-FS100, and is lightweight enough for comfortable handheld shooting. Jump past the break for a closer look live from Las Vegas, with Sony Senior Vice President Alec Shapiro.

Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Welcomes Guns N' Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers

Beastie Boys were also inducted on a night when Guns singer Axl Rose refused to attend.

If it's the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, then drama is as much a prerequisite as loud guitars, receding hairlines and a night-ending all-star jam on a golden oldie.

Saturday night's 27th edition was no exception according to reports, with as much intrigue as a telenovela, as well as some genuinely peaceful Southern California bro-downage, irreverent induction speeches and fresh spots in the Hall for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, The Faces, Freddie King, Laura Nyro and Guns N' Roses.

The spotlight, of course, was on the famously fractured band of battling former brothers in GNR. Lead singer and sole remaining original member Axl Rose loudly decried the institution in a scathing letter
earlier in the week, saying he would not attend and intimating that anyone who did was a fraud.

That was just fine for former guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan, who made the most of the honor, while, ahem, never once mentioning Rose. "I don't know that it matters who's here tonight, because it's about the music that these bands played," said McKagan, who jammed a short time later on three songs with a pseudo-GNR made up of Slash, former Guns guitarist Gilby Clarke and drummers Steven Adler and Matt Sorum and Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy. It was the first time in nearly 20 years that Slash, McKagan and Adler had performed together and according to reports there were little signs of rust on the classics "Sweet Child O' Mine" and "Paradise City."

In his induction speech at the Cleveland ceremony, Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong dubbed Guns' 1987 album, Appetite for Destruction, "the best debut album in the history of rock and roll ... every song hits hard. It takes you ion a trip to the seedy world of Los Angeles. The thing that set them apart from everyone else was guts." And after ticking off the strengths of all the members of the group, he cheekily added, "Let's see, who am I missing?" The latter set off yet another chorus of four-letter catcalls from the 7,400 in attendance, which inspired Armstrong to add, "Shut up. He [Rose] was the greatest frontman to ever step in front of a microphone."

Rose wasn't the only star missing. Rod Stewart was not on hand to celebrate with the Faces/Small Faces because he was reportedly sick with the flu and Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch was absent because of ongoing recovery from cancer treatment.

B Boys member Mike D made up for it, giving a shout-out to the trio's hometown for inspiration. "Thank you, New York City, for basically raising us and giving us all the music we love and grew up on," said D, who was on hand along with bandmate Ad-Rock to celebrate becoming only the third hip-hop act in the Hall. During a later performance, Kid Rock, Travie McCoy and the Roots' Black Thought joined the duo for a medley of their classics, including "Sabotage."

Also inducted were Donovan, blues guitarist Freddie King, Laura Nyro, music exec Don Kirshner and a number of sidemen and backup musicians.

Accepting their award from comedian Chris Rock, Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis said it felt a bit weird to join such a hallowed hall when his band is still out on the road promoting new music. "We're going somewhere," he said. "How can we stop and take an award when really we're just halfway there?" The Peppers later performed with a triple-drummer line-up that included two former skins pounders, Jack Irons and Cliff Martinez.

The five-plus hour ceremony will be boiled down to a two-and-a-half hour special for a May 5 HBO broadcast.
