Hitachi CP-A221N

Hitachi's ultra-short throw projectors have always been impressive, so it's no surprise that the CP-A221N ($1,300 street) carries on in that tradition. It can throw a big, bright image onto a screen only a few inches away; it delivers high quality data images and better than par video for an XGA data projector; and it goes beyond the basics, including features like the ability to mount it facing straight down to give you a tabletop display. Add it all up, and it's a runaway pick for Editors' Choice.

The CP-A221 is unusually small for an ultra-short throw projector. Most models from other companies, including the Dell S500wi ($1,599 direct, 4 stars), the NEC NP-U310W ($1,299 direct, 4 stars), and the Editors' Choice Optoma TW675UTi-3D ($1,800 street, 4 stars), are best reserved for either permanent installation or room to room portability on a cart. The CP-A221N is also suitable for both of those roles, but at 8.6 pounds and just 4.0 by 13.6 by 11.9 inches (HWD), it's light enough to carry by hand easily, and even use as a portable projector.

One other key difference between the Hitachi projector and the other three models is that the CP-A221N isn't interactive. That means you can't replace an interactive whiteboard with it. However, interactivity adds to the price, so if you don't need the feature, there's no reason to pay for it. Hitachi also offers a wireless tablet option ($399 list), that can serve much the same purpose by letting you draw and add annotations using the tablet.

Basics and Setup
Other than the ultra-short throw, the CP-A221N offers a typical set of features for an LCD-based XGA projector. To begin with, it doesn't show the rainbow artifacts common in DLP-based projectors. This isn't usually worth mention when talking about an LCD projector, because it's a given that there won't be any. In this case, however, most of the competition is DLP-based. So if you worry about the artifacts being an issue for someone in your audience, the guaranteed rainbow-free nature of an LCD-based projector can be an important advantage.

Setting up the projector is absolutely standard. Connection choices for data and video include an HDMI port for a computer or video source, two VGA ports for either computers or component video, a VGA pass-through port, and both S-video and composite video ports. In addition, there's a USB A port so you can plug in a USB memory key and read JPG, PNG, BMP, and GIF files directly.

Throw Distance, Brightness, and Image Quality
Hitachi says the suitable range for image sizes at the A221N's native 4:3 aspect ratio is 60 to 100 inches diagonally, with the front of the projector 3.8 to 13.9 inches from the screen. (Add 12.1 inches more to the mirror in the back of the projector, which is where the lens points, so the image can bounce off the mirror and towards the screen.) For my tests, I measured the image at 98 inches diagonally (78 inches wide) at not quite 14 inches from the screen, which is consistent with Hitachi's numbers.

Hitachi rates the projector at 2,200 lumens. That's lower than the 3,100 and 3,200 lumen ratings for the S500wi , NP-U310W , and TW675UTi-3D , but bright enough in my tests for the 98-inch image to stand up to moderate ambient light without a problem.

The projector scored well for data image quality. It did a good job of maintaining even brightness across the entire screen, which can be a problem for short throw and ultra-short throw projectors, and it sailed through our standard suite of DisplayMate tests without any serious problems. Colors were vibrant and fully saturated, both black on white and white on black text was crisp and easily readable down to the smallest size we test with, and images designed to show pixel jitter were rock solid even with an analog connection.

The projector's native resolution limits video to standard definition, so a 16:9 image falls far short of the level of crispness you'd expect at 720p, much less 1080p. However, the projector will accept signals all the way up to 1080p before scaling them down. More important, aside from the lack of fine detail. it handles video unusually well for a data projector.

I saw a slight hint of posterization (shading changing suddenly where it should change gradually), and problems with shadow detail (losing details based on shading in dark areas), but only in scenes that tend to cause those problems. I didn't see either issue in the vast majority of our test clips, and I didn't see any other important issues. The quality isn't a match for a typical home theater projector, but it's good enough to let you watch a full-length movie without being distracted by obvious flaws in the image.

Other Issues

The A221N's 10-watt mono speaker is another plus. The audio systems in most projectors in this weight class are hardly worth having. The A221N, however offers reasonably good sound quality, and enough volume to fill a large conference room or mid-size classroom.

One other feature, which I've already mentioned, is that you can mount the projector facing down to turn a tabletop into a display. Not all ultra-short throw projectors can manage this trick. Facing down changes airflow, which can lead to overheating and shorter lamp life. However, the A221N is designed for facing either down or forward, and Hitachi even sells an optional tabletop mount for it ($200 street).

Also worth mention is that although the projector's fan is loud enough in Normal mode (with a 34 dB rating) to be a little distracting if you're sitting right next to it around a table, switching to Eco mode drops it to whisper quiet (rated at 28 dB). It doesn't hurt either that Eco mode increases lamp life from a claimed 3,000 hours to 5,000. At $329 (list) per lamp, that can lower the total cost of ownership significantly.

As should be obvious, the Hitachi A221N does what it promises, and does it well. Small enough to be portable and bright enough for permanent installation in a conference room, it can give you a big image in tight quarters, so you don't have to worry about shadows from anything near the screen. It offers high-quality data images and useable video?which is more than you can say for a lot of data projectors. And its long lamp life in Eco mode can save money over the projector lifetime. If you need an ultra-short throw projector with a native XGA resolution, put the Hitachi A221N high on your short list.

American Football: With Luck on their side Colts were happy to lose Manning

It is a case of bad luck for Peyton Manning. Amid choked words and bittersweet tears, the iconic quarterback said farewell to the Indianapolis Colts after he was released this week. The 36-year-old leaves behind 14 legendary seasons that included four MVP trophies, 11 play-off appearances and two AFC championships. He is third all-time in NFL history for passing yards (54,828) and touchdowns (399) and he was MVP in Super Bowl XLI in 2007, when he captained his team to victory over the Chicago Bears.

"I sure have loved playing football for the Indianapolis Colts," Manning said, fighting back tears during Wednesday's press conference.

"For 14 wonderful years, the only professional football I've known is Colts football. But I guess in life and in sports, we all know that nothing lasts for ever. Times change, circumstances change, and that's the reality of playing in the NFL."

Despite his pedigree, Manning's release came as no surprise. His career with the Colts was cut short due to events that had one thing in common. Luck.

Manning has always been known as one of the most durable athletes. From the day he was selected by the Colts with the No 1 pick in the 1998 draft, all the way to 2010, he did not miss a game. It was an incredible feat for a player in such a vulnerable position ? his 227 consecutive games constitute the second longest streak for a quarterback in NFL history. But this year, his good luck turned sour. He sat out the entire 2011 season with a serious neck injury, having to undergo four operations in a 19-month span.

"To say I am disappointed in not being able to play is an understatement," Manning said in a statement in September. "I simply am not healthy enough to play, and I am doing everything I can to get my health back. The team will do fine without me, and I know for sure that I will miss them much more than they will miss me."

The Colts were not fine without Manning, and the bad luck continued to spread. They struggled without their quarterback and had the worst record in the NFL, winning only two of their 16 games. However, such a pitiful season gave Indianapolis not only the No 1 pick in this year's draft, but the opportunity to reverse their bad fortune with the best luck available. Andrew Luck.

The Stanford quarterback is the consensus No 1 draft pick this year, and although the draft is not until 26 April, it is expected that the Colts will select the 22-year-old.

"Andrew Luck is the most dynamic quarterbacking talent to come out [of college] since John Elway," said the former Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick, comparing Luck to the Hall of Famer who was drafted No 1 and played for the Denver Broncos. "Luck has more credentials than anybody since Elway."

In three seasons at Stanford, Luck passed for an incredible 9,430 yards and had 82 touchdowns. He was runner-up twice for college football's most coveted award, the Heisman Trophy.

While many fans are excited about the extremely good Luck the Colts are destined to acquire, others wonder if it was worth cutting Manning. In truth, it made perfect sense. By releasing Manning, the Colts avoided paying a $28m (?17.8m) bonus that he was due to receive on Thursday, and while Manning now claims to be healthy, questions remain over whether he will ever be able to recuperate fully.

"I've got some progress to make, but I've come a long way," Manning said. "I've really worked hard. I'll continue to work hard and hopefully make some progress. I don't want to retire. And no, I don't feel like I have anything to prove. Nobody loves playing quarterback more than I do. I still want to play."

Manning will have suitors, among them the Kansas City Chiefs, the Miami Dolphins, the New York Jets and the Washington Redskins. The Colts can only hope their new quarterback achieves the same success as the man he is due to replace.

"Peyton was my football hero growing up," Luck said. "That's who I modelled myself after. You never truly replace a guy like that."

If he tries to do so, he will need all the luck he can get.

Shooting at University of Pittsburgh clinic kills one

A man entered a psychiatric clinic on campus and opened fire, killing one person and wounding others before he was killed by police.

A man armed with two semiautomatic handguns entered the lobby of a psychiatric clinic at the University of Pittsburgh on Thursday and opened fire, killing one person and wounding several others before he was shot dead, apparently by campus police, the mayor said.

Six people were wounded by the man's gunfire, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said. A seventh suffered unspecified injuries but wasn't shot, officials said.

The mayor stopped short of confirming the gunman was fatally shot by at least one University of Pittsburgh police officer who responded. But he confirmed "police acted admirably and did engage in gunfire."

"There's no doubt that their swift response saved lives today," Ravenstahl said.

One of the injured was a police officer who Ravenstahl said was grazed by a bullet. Officials didn't say if that officer shot the gunman, whose identity and relationship to the clinic, if any, weren't disclosed. The injured people included employees and a visitor, said Dr. Donald Yealy, chair of emergency medicine at the university's medical school.

Shooting witness Gregory Brant said he was in a waiting room on the first floor of the clinic building when pandemonium broke out.

"We heard a bunch of yelling, some shooting, people yelling, 'Hide! Hide!" he said. "Everyone's yelling, 'Stay down!'"

Brant, 53, and six other people, including a young girl and her parents, barricaded themselves inside the waiting room. But he said they did not feel safe because there were doors with windows along adjacent walls.

"The way the room was arranged, if he (the gunman) had gone to either window and would have seen us in there, he could have done whatever he wanted," Brant said.

The group crouched in a corner, hoping the gunman wouldn't see them as he went past, Brant said. The men in the group decided on the spot that if the gunman entered the room, they would rush him.

"We were kind of sitting ducks," Brant said. "Luckily, he didn't see us in there, and we didn't make eye contact with him."

Brant estimated the ordeal lasted 15 or 20 minutes.

Neighboring buildings were placed on lockdown for hours, police said.

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center spokesman Paul Wood said media reports about a possible second gunman and a hostage situation at the clinic or at nearby UPMC Presbyterian hospital were unfounded.

A SWAT team was on the scene shortly after the shooting. A street was blocked off, and the area thronged with police. Most students are on spring break, though offices and buildings have been open.

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center said it had received some patients from the shooting. It said two patients were in intensive care, two were released and three were being admitted. All were expected to survive.

The clinic, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, is located in the city's Oakland neighborhood, a couple of miles east of downtown, and is affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and one of several affiliated hospitals adjacent to the university campus. Other schools are nearby, including Carnegie Mellon, Carlow and Chatham universities.

Pete Finelli, who lives two blocks from the clinic and once worked there as a student nursing assistant, said security guards are always at the part of the building where it the shooting is believed to have occurred, on the ground floor.

Patient rooms are on the upper floors, he said, but anyone on the first floor would have to be someone being either admitted or discharged.

"The only place a person would be on the first floor is the emergency room," he said.

Pitt sent out email and text alerts shortly after 2 p.m. to warn people of the shooting.

"An active shooter has been identified at Western Psychiatric Institute. Several injured," the alert said. "Possible second actor in Western Psych. Lockdown recommended until further notice. If safe to do so, tell others of this message."

Lawton Snyder, executive director of Pitt's Eye and Ear Foundation, said he and two other staffers were locked down about a block away, in a building that connects to the clinic. He said it was unnerving.

"Obviously I'm terribly sad for those injured. We're just hoping everybody's OK and things are resolved quickly and that they can apprehend those who are responsible," he said.

Patient Kevin Bonner, who was staying on the building's ninth floor, several floors above the shooting scene, said there was a normal atmosphere there, with patients in the common room listening to music, watching TV, drinking and eating snacks. Bonner said no one at the hospital had told them what was going on.

He said he had been napping and awoke to hear an announcement on the intercom: "Bronze Alert on the first floor."

"I didn't think I was hearing my ears right until I looked out the window" and saw police cars and a sniper, he said.

The alert and lockdown ended Thursday evening, but the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center asked that people avoid the clinic while the investigation into the shooting continued. People were free to go when and where they pleased at the two network hospitals nearest the clinic, UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Shadyside, which also had been locked down earlier in the day.

Drug-Free Organ Transplants From Unrelated Donors

It remains unclear whether the secret to Ildstad?s recipe is the facilitating cells or the timing of a certain chemotherapy drug, called cyclophosphamide, that is used to prevent graft rejection and GvHD. ?The facilitating cell adds an extra level of complexity that might not be necessary,? Tisdale says. The question is difficult to answer ? all of the study subjects received the facilitating cells.

Moreover, much about the cells themselves and the method used to isolate them remain shrouded in a veil of secrecy ? Ildstad is seeking a way to commercialize the approach through a company she founded called Regenerex, based in Louisville. ?It?s difficult to assess something that doesn?t provide the key methodology,? says Megan Sykes, director of the Columbia Center for Translational Immunology at Columbia University in New York. ?Nobody is quite sure what these cells are.?

So the good news is that this will likely be funded right through the trials phase. The bad news is that it'll come out the other end wrapped in IP restrictions and not widely available to the public as a standard procedure.

Hulk Hogan on Sex Tape Partner Identity: Got Me!

A new sex tape has surfaced that stars Hulk Hogan giving his multiple-inch python to an anonymous brunette. The former wrestling legend doesn't deny its existence.

But when asked by TMZ yesterday to identify the woman in the video, Hogan pleaded ignorance and cited a four-month alcohol/banging binge he went on between the period of divorcing long-time wife Linda and meeting new wife Jennifer McDaniel.

"During that time, I don't even remember people's names, much less girls," the Hulkster told the site.

Terry Bollea Pic

Hogan claims to have no clue who is selling the tape, but - despite urging from Vivid Entertainment Chairman Steve Hirsch, who says there will be "huge demand" for the video - he and his lawyer says they will take full legal action if it gets out.

Amish Farm Kids Have Lower Asthma, Allergy Risk: Study

TUESDAY, March 6 (HealthDay News) -- Children growing up in the Amish culture in Switzerland have significantly less asthma and allergies than Swiss children who didn't grow up on a farm, according to new research.

What's more, the Amish youngsters even have less risk of asthma and allergy than Swiss children who grew up on non-Amish farms.

The study could support the "hygiene hypothesis" that a too-clean world is causing today's urbanized kids to be more sensitive to allergens than their country cousins.

"In Europe, children living on traditional farms seem to have a very low prevalence of asthma and allergy," noted the study's lead author, Dr. Mark Holbreich, an allergist with Allergy and Asthma Consultants, in Indianapolis. In contrast, he said, "in the general population as many as 50 percent will have evidence of allergic sensitivity. They may not have all the symptoms of allergy, but they will test positive for sensitivity,"

But, "in Swiss children who live on farms, about 25 percent have allergic sensitivity," Holbreich said. "In Amish children, it was only 7 percent. There's something very protective in the Amish children."

He was scheduled to present the study's findings Sunday at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) in Orlando, Fla.

In the study, Holbreich and his colleagues in Switzerland sent out nearly 29,000 questionnaires to families of children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old. The Amish were given a modified version of the questionnaire.

A random sample of those who completed the questionnaires was selected to be given allergy testing.

"The Amish children (138) underwent skin tests," Holbreich explained, and "the Swiss farm children and non-farm children had blood tests for measurement of allergies. For the farm children 3,006 were tested by a blood test and 10,912 non-farm children were tested."

The study authors identified asthma cases by asking if a physician had ever diagnosed the child with asthma, Holbreich said.

Amish children had about half the prevalence of asthma compared to their non-farm-dwelling counterparts (about 5 percent vs. 11 percent). Swiss farm children had a rate of asthma of nearly 7 percent.

The rate of allergic sensitization followed similar patterns. Non-farm children had the highest rates, at about 44 percent, compared with 25 percent in the Swiss farm children and just above 7 percent among the Amish children.

So, what accounts for this striking difference? Holbreich said the researchers don't know for sure, but two factors appeared to be protective against allergy and asthma in the Amish children. One was that they drink raw [unpasteurized] milk directly from the cow, and the other was their exposure to large farm animals from a young age.

"When you have these exposures at a young age, that protection seems to be lifelong," said Holbreich.

He cautioned, however, that these finding in no way suggest that people should start giving their children raw milk, as it can harbor disease-causing germs.

But, the study's findings would seem to support the hygiene hypothesis, which is the idea that allergy and asthma are on the rise in today's world because the immune system isn't exposed to a variety of germs from a young age. This low level of exposure somehow creates dysfunction in the immune system, causing it to attack harmless substances, such as pet dander or peanut proteins.

Two other studies presented at the AAAAI meeting may also provide support for the hygiene hypothesis. One is a Korean study of about 1,800 children. It found that when antibiotics were given during infancy, children were more likely to develop allergies and allergic skin disease (eczema).

The other was a study from Johns Hopkins Hospital that looked at environmental exposures to chemicals. Researchers found that exposure to triclosan, a commonly used antibacterial agent found in hand sanitizers and mouthwashes, was significantly associated with allergies to food and airborne allergens, such as dust or pollen.

While the Swiss study found an association between Amish farm life and lower incidence of allergy and asthma, it could not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Dr. Jennifer Appleyard, chief of allergy and immunology at St. Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, said one protective factor that the authors of the Amish study didn't mention is that the Amish live a fairly secluded existence and thus, have a fairly protected gene pool. Since genetics are one suspected aspect in the development of asthma and allergy, it may just be that the Amish aren't passing down the genes for those conditions, she reasoned.

"These are interesting things to think about, but there are so many confounding factors to look at. I don't think it's just Amish living or farm life. Genes play a role, access to care, environmental exposures. Maybe it's not that they're drinking raw milk, but that they're drinking milk without hormones. Or, they're not getting other environmental exposures that non-farm children are," she noted.

Because this research was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.
