How Was the Sales Training? 14 Comments to Avoid at All Costs

Failure is popular these days.

Seriously.

I?ve been reading (and recommend) The Lean Startup by Eric Ries. In The Lean Startup, Ries covers a number of concepts to help entrepreneurs and their new ventures to succeed. One such concept is ?Validated Learning?.

Essentially, Validated Learning is a process by which you try a lot of things that you think make sense, measure the results, find that you made a lot of mistakes and hit on some successes, and keep on keeping on by avoiding the mistakes and testing new things.

I like it. For a business.?

For sales training, not so much.

I?m a fan of failure when the consequences of it are small and the learning can lead to big wins. With product features, market positioning, pricing, lead generation campaigns and other areas, tests can fail and few in the market will remember or care.

Fail with your sales team, however, and good luck getting a second (or third, or fourth) chance.

If you?re a company leader, sales leader or sales trainer, you don?t want it to feel like you?re pushing a boulder uphill every time you do something with the aim of improving sales performance.

If your initiative doesn?t work, getting the team?s attention and commitment to anything you present to them after a big fat fail is almost impossible. (And you thought it was tough to get their attention and commitment before a big fat fail.)

What does sales training failure look like? Hear any of the following comments after asking, ?How was the sales training?? and you?re closing in on it.

  1. This program wasted my time. What a joke.

  2. The instructor?where?d you get that guy?

  3. I didn?t really see how it all connected. Couldn?t we have put something together that was really applicable to us?

  4. (One week after the program)

    You: ?What did you cover??

Participant: ?You know, sales skill stuff.?

    You: ?Like what??

Participant: ?Well, I don?t have my binder in front of me...let me go get it.?

  5. Did it have to be so boring? Having someone talk at me for 2 days was a bad idea.

  6. So the sales training program?s over. Am I supposed to do something differently now?

  7. We learned about asking great questions. The right questions. Wish I knew what they were?

  8. What they suggest we do for selling...unrealistic. Won?t work. Too complicated. Too simplistic. Doesn?t feel right. Doesn?t fit our specific business.

  9. At the sales training we learned about all the drivers that make top sellers successful, and the problems that can hold them back. How do I stack up against them? Without that insight, I don?t know where to change. What to work on.

  10. I tried to apply what I learned and it didn?t work. In fact, it was embarrassing.

  11. I tried to apply what I learned but couldn?t figure out how to do that.

  12. (Several months after the program)

You: ?Let?s talk about what you learned in the sales training program. What are your key takeaways that you?re using??

Participant: ?You know, I?m using all the skills that I learned.?

    You: ?Like which ones??

Participant: ?Well, I don?t have my binder in front of me...let me go get it.?

  13. How am I doing with it all now? Have I improved? Wish I knew?

  14. Company leader: ?It?s been a year since sales training. What have the results been so far? Are people using it? Have they improved? Are sales up? Margins up? Cross selling up? Account retention up??

You: ?I wish I had that data. Sorry.?

Pick your poison.

It?s true, I?m a fan of failure. Wayne Gretzky used to say that he missed all of the shots that he didn?t take. He failed in order to succeed.

You have to take shots, too. It?s the only way you?ll improve your fortunes and find success.

Yet you have, within your power, the ability to maximize your chances for success while, at the same time, minimizing your missed shots. Think Validated Learning, but with a twist.

Instead of learning from your own failures and successes, start by avoiding the failures that others have made, and building on their successes.

At work in Iraq with Anthony Shadid

Naseer Mehdawi, Anthony Shadid's closest Iraqi friend and journalism colleague, recalls their friendship and how together they told the story of Iraq.

Reporters are cantankerous, competitive and frequently catty. Yet Anthony Shadid's sad and untimely death has brought forth nothing but praise and admiration from every corner. An old friend reminded me yesterday of a conversation in 2006 in which I told her that "Shadid, hands down, is the best reporter working in Iraq." I suspect all of us who covered the war there said that at one time or another. Like all of us, of course, he had help, particularly from Naseer Mehdawi, the Iraqi colleague who worked with him on the stories that landed Anthony the 2004 Pulitzer.

?One of the reasons that Anthony inspired such love was his generosity of spirit and appreciation of others. He knew he wasn't out there alone. He wrote the following to Naseer in his copy of Anthony's 2006 book on Iraq, "Night Draws Near": "There is no better friend in this world, no colleague more loyal, no man who I admire more. This book should have your name on the cover! You are like my brother and always will be." Naseer has kindly shared his thoughts on Anthony and their collaboration below. - Dan Murphy

I remember the first time I met Anthony Shadid in February 2003. I had been working for The Washington Post in Baghdad with Rajiv Chandrasekaran and the photographer Michael Robinson Chavez. Anthony had joined Rajiv and me and Chavez. Rajiv introduced Anthony to me and told me that he was a great journalist. He had been working with another paper, but the Post hired him because he is the best. Then orders came from Phil Bennett, who was the Post?s assistant managing editor for foreign news at the time, that all the journalists of the Post should leave Iraq because the troops were gathering in the Gulf and the war would happen. But Anthony refused. He stayed and asked me if I would like to stay with him. I was very interested in journalism and looking at what might happen. Rajiv left with Chavez to wait in Kuwait. (They later returned after the war started.) It was only me and Anthony. Our driver was Karim Sadon. After that we were pretty much Anthony?s team, me and Karim. Everyone at the Post knew that we were Anthony?s guys.

I started my journey with Anthony looking for people expressing their feeling about what would happen. I had an instinct that the regime would collapse. I made up my mind to help him and support him. I took Anthony to Kadhamiya, a large Shiite neighborhood in Baghdad. All the people there hated Saddam because he was targeting them and killed many of their families during the uprising after the 1991 Gulf War. When I told Anthony about this, he was happy about the tip, and he started to get closer to me, to count on me. I had begun to think like Anthony, to know the kinds of stories he wanted, the people he wanted to meet. Anthony liked talking to people on the streets, the real people who were affected by Saddam and affected by the war. His confidence in me became stronger.

I remember that Saddam?s Information Ministry gave us an order to go to specific places. We refused. We went to forbidden places that no one dared to go except me and Anthony. At restaurants we?d talk about where to go next, all the places Saddam did not want us to see. We set out on daily trips with our brave driver, Karim, going to various parts of the country, meeting people, discussing issues, and making friends. We met workers at factories, farmers in the fields, government employees who were fed up with the restrictions of the regime, university students aspiring for an opportunity to be free and express their woes and dreams, clerics secluded inside their small mosques, and just simple, down-to-earth people. We listened to stories of women who had lost their husbands and sons in the many wars waged by the regime.

When Writing Or Speaking Learn That Less Is More | SQLRockstar ...

If I were you, I wouldn't dare interrupt him.

Big words and long sentences will likely not serve you well as a writer. When it comes to making presentations the same holds true: don?t ramble on hoping to find the words that will have everyone in the room thinking you are the smartest person to ever grace their presence.

I?ve learned a few things along the way. First: use short sentences when writing. Second, eliminate the ?jelly? when writing and when speaking. Third, it?s hard to do those first two things when you are told to ?write naturally, as if you were speaking? and you tend to ramble anyway like your whole life is one long run-on sentence. But I digress?

I came across the following two links recently and so I wanted to share them with you.

First we have a link to a memo written by David Ogilvy to his employees titled ?How to Write? and it was a list of tips that included the following gems:

  • Use short words, short sentences and short paragraphs.
  • Never use jargon words like?reconceptualize,?demassification, attitudinally,?judgmentally. They are hallmarks of a pretentious ass.
  • If it is something important, get a colleague to improve it.
  • If you want ACTION,?don?t write. Go and?tell?the guy what you want.

This isn?t the first time I have heard suggestions about how writing should be kept to short sentences. The most notable reference example I have been told about came from Hemingway. I believe that he knew a thing or two about writing, especially the whole ?write drunk, edit sober? part.

Second we have a link to an article about presentations, ?In Presentations, Learn To Say Less?. This post ties well to the earlier reference I had to the jelly effect: focus on the important details when speaking to someone. Eliminate the jelly. The classic example is when you describe your company to someone and the first thing you say is ?we were founded in 1986?. Nobody cares when you were founded. Nintendo was founded in 1889 but didn?t start making video games until the mid 1970?s and OMG nobody cares about any of that. They only want to know when the next game will be released so stop wasting their time!

The article has some nice points that I have been using when putting together my outlines like I am doing for TechEd at the moment:

  • Work backwards. Start with the key points and fill in the details on how to get to the key points.
  • Practice your presentation without slides. This will help with your delivery, especially with transitions.
  • Imagine the questions that your audience may ask.

If you learn to write less it will also translate to your presentation style. This will help you be an effective communicator, someone who others will want to read more frequently, or attend your presentations more often.

35 Luxury Real Estate Agents Share Their Secrets For Selling ...

real estate realtor

In a volatile housing market, one niche segment has remained fairly strong?the ultraluxury segment.

While talking to realtors and industry insiders for our list of the most successful realtors of the past year (who we defined as making the biggest single-home sales in the last 12 months), we heard some great home-selling tales and got valuable tips about how to sell an astronomically-priced home.

It was all too good not to share.

JOSH ALTMAN: Experience is my best asset

Altman sold an 11-bedroom, 16-bathroom mansion on Beverly Park for $16.5 million.

The celebrity realtor, one of the stars of Bravo?s hit Million Dollar Listings, scored the sixth-highest sale last year in Los Angeles County when this deal closed.

When pulling in such a mega-deal, Altman said his experience is his best asset.

?It?s a strategy that you kind of just learn from doing lots of sales,? he said, adding that realtors have to be on their ?A-game? when dealing with high-end customers, because the customers are very smart and business-savvy and have lots of options.

Before joining the prestigious Hilton & Hyland firm, Altman invested in properties and began flipping homes about 10 years ago. From there he migrated to the finance side of real estate and eventually wound up on the agent side.

?The most important thing when showing these people houses is you?ve got to show them the value,? he said.

EMILY BEARE: The luxury market is shifting from Wall Streeters to creative types

Beare sold a New York City cupola penthouse apartment for $13 million.

Beare got a once-in-a-career chance when she scored the opportunity to sell one of the five residential cupolas in the city.

?This was truly, truly a very unique property,? she said.

That uniqueness of the apartment lent itself to an impressive sale. Beare never advertised the vacancy in the building, but people were still drawn to the listing because of how beautiful the building was.

Beare got her start in the industry after she was introduced to some South African developers who needed her help with a project. Through the project she met the CEO of CORE Group and her career took off.

During her time in the business, she has seen a shift in her clients.

?I think the luxury market is at least changing. It?s changing with the times,? she said, adding that more creative types are snapping up high-end real estate.

And one of those creative types brought her to tears. Beare had been trying to place an artist in a home for years but the right thing hadn?t come along. So Beare started waking up earlier and earlier to check the latest listings and she finally found an apartment that had just hit the market.

It belonged to Elizabeth Murray, a woman her client greatly admired. Once Beare brought her client to the apartment, she said they both burst into tears because they knew they had finally found the right place.

RAYMOND BOLDUC: Use the property?s strengths to entertain the crowd

Bolduc sold an eight-bedroom, nine-bathroom home on North Bay Road for $20 million.?

When Bolduc wants to close a deal, he throws a party.?

He hosts events at the homes he is selling as a way to advertise the properties and bring in potential buyers. In the case of the home on North Bay Road, he hosted a gala at the house for 500 people, complete with yachts and Rolls Royces.

At different properties, he has showcased artwork or other luxury commodities.

?It (the party) has to fit the profile of the house,? he said.

After he earned his Master?s in Boston, Bolduc said he bought a house and renovated it, giving him his first foray into the world of real estate.

He eventually moved to Florida to work with Sotheby?s International Realty.

Throughout his career, he has worked with everyone from celebrities to international businessmen.

In particular, the sale on North Bay Road, which was ultimately bought by a Russian real estate developer,? introduced him to clients from 10 different countries.

?So that was pretty exciting,? he said of the sale.

Christchurch still 'safe haven' for quake survivor

(AP) ? Jane Taylor was managing a women's clothing store in downtown Christchurch a year ago when the earthquake struck. She was dug from the rubble within minutes with horrific injuries ? her vertebrae were crushed, her skull was fractured and her pelvis smashed.

Like Taylor, many survivors of the Feb. 22 earthquake continue to feel the emotional and physical pain from the tragedy that left 185 people dead in New Zealand's worst natural disaster in 80 years. Yet they are also rediscovering what it means to be part of a family and a community, and life is settling into familiar rhythms.

Taylor was in the hospital for three months, at first in an induced coma. But the 54-year-old says that in the months since, she has found strength from those around her, and has never considered leaving Christchurch.

"It's our place of love," she told The Associated Press. Of the fellow survivors she's gotten to know, "each of us is inspired every day by each other."

In many ways, the city remains a mess, a testament of the fury unleashed by the magnitude-6.1 temblor. The business district is a giant construction site. Thousands of homeowners have been told to leave their land after the government deemed entire neighborhoods too unstable to repopulate. And significant aftershocks jolt people's confidence.

Yet, when Statistics New Zealand measured the population of Christchurch four months after the earthquake, it found it had declined by just 2.4 percent, down to 368,000.

Recalling that day, Taylor explained how she was in the store in the Cashel Street Mall when she felt a violent shaking and began running.

"The verandah upstairs basically landed on me," she said. "Big blocks of concrete. I was bent over like a staple, my bum on the ground and my head on my feet."

Two men dug her out from the rubble and moved her to a bench, but there was chaos all around and no way for an emergency vehicle to reach her.

"It was pretty shocking," she said. "There was debris falling, dust filling my mouth and nostrils, people screaming."

Taylor sat there for an hour, held upright at first by a friend and then by her husband, before a police car could get close and take her away.

After three months in the hospital and another three in physical therapy, she was able to walk unaided thanks to a titanium cage that doctors inserted to support her spine. These days, she has weakness in her pelvis and chronic pain but said she's proud of her recovery and full mobility.

Despite the continuing aftershocks, she said she considers Christchurch her "safe haven" thanks to her family and friends. She said she believes she developed the emotional strength to handle her injuries after her 18-year-old son Alex was killed by a drunk driver four years ago.

"Your priorities change after something like that, and you realize that it's your family and being together that's so important," Taylor said, adding that she and her husband, Shaun, "developed a closeness and a strength as a couple after that."

For others, there remains the lingering question: Why did I survive when so many others died?

Emily Cooper, 23, was a reporter on assignment at a local park when the quake struck. The Canterbury Television (CTV) building where she worked collapsed in the quake, accounting for a majority of the deaths from the quake ? 115. Among them were two people she considered close friends ? Rhys Brookbanks, 25, whom Cooper had known since journalism school, and Sam Gibb, 27, her producer at CTV.

"The guilt wasn't something that lasted just a few days after the quake. It lasted months and has never really gone away," Cooper said. "It's changed from guilt to confusion. I will never really understand why. I can't help but think, why me?"

Cooper has since left CTV and now works for a radio station. However, she said she feels compelled to stay in Christchurch and keep reporting the stories of the people there who are struggling to rebuild their lives.

One pair whose image resonated with people around the world that day are Kent and Elizabeth Manning, teenagers whose photo was captured at the moment an officer told them there was no hope of finding more survivors in the collapsed CTV building, where their mother, Donna Manning, was killed.

The teen's uncle, Maurice Gardiner, said that a year later, they are healing.

"Both Elizabeth and Kent have good days and bad days, as we all do, but they are getting on with their lives," he said. "Kent is back at high school and Lizzy is at work."

Gardiner said he was "very, very proud" of how the teens had coped with all the issues they faced after their mother's death, from figuring out where they would live (Manning was a single mother) to arranging memorials.

On the anniversary of the quake Wednesday, Gardiner said, the teens plan to bury their mother's ashes at a local cemetery. That, he said, may help bring some closure.

"One of the things that has come out of all this is that people spend a lot more time with each other," Gardiner said. "Not only with our family, but throughout the city. As we put things back together, we are very much looking after each other, caring for each other."

Why Should Injured Parties Reject Texas Workers' Compensation ...

One of the most important things that any injured person looks forward to after getting injured on the job anywhere in the state, is getting access to the right level of Texas Workers? Compensation Benefits. The standard step for the injured party to take is therefore to inform the employer officially of the injury sustained in writing. The employee is also required to inform the employer of the decision to seek Texas Workers? Compensation Benefits as a result of the injury sustained. The employee then collects and files the necessary forms while attaching vital documents such as medical reports and documentation as well as injury reports and witness statements. All these steps are taken with the hope of earning Texas Workers? Compensation Benefits so why do some injured parties reject settlements offered by insurance carriers?

Well there are many factors that should be considered before accepting a Texas Workers? Compensation Benefits settlement when you receive an offer from your employer?s insurer. Your benefit should not just cover your current medical costs but your future expenses on medical treatment as well. If the kind of injury sustained gives you a higher probability of requiring surgery, costly medication or specialized forms of medical attention after your Texas workers compensation benefits settlement date then it may be a bad idea to accept a final settlement. You should know that settling your claim with an insurer rules out the possibility of getting any more benefits in future regardless of how bad your medical condition may deteriorate. Since no insurance carrier will calculate the full amount of money you need to cover your future medical expenses, you will get just a fraction of the cost of future treatment. In essence, never accept a settlement for your Texas Workers? Compensation Benefits if your medical condition is severe and requires extensive medical attention.

Remember A Settlement Means No Future Texas Workers? Compensation Benefits

Reaching a settlement with an insurance carrier for your Texas Workers? Compensation Benefits essentially means that you are selling your right to take on the insurance carrier for financial or medical benefits in future, no matter how bad your health may turn out to be. The reason why insurers try to reach Texas Workers? Compensation Benefits settlements with injured parties is to end the duration of a claim so that they won?t be liable for the employee?s injury anymore. This often happens when the insurance company realizes that they stand to lose more money by continually paying the Texas Workers? Compensation Benefits of the injured worker.

Unfortunately, some injuries sustained by workers on the job may require multiple surgeries while others may require continuous treatment for the entire lifetime of the patient. Reaching settlement with an insurer instead of receiving continuous Texas Workers? Compensation Benefits often spells disaster for the injured party. It?s important to seek medical advice from your Texas workers? compensation treating doctor as well as your attorney before reaching any settlements with your employer?s insurer. If there are any doubts then it will be wise to reject a settlement and opt for continuous Texas Workers? Compensation Benefits until you recuperate fully.
